The band consists of: Florence Welch (vocals), Robert Ackroyd (guitar), Isabella Summers (aka Isa Machine - keyboards), Tom Monger (harp), Mark Saunders (bass, percussion), Christopher Lloyd Hayden (drums, backing vocals), Rusty Bradshaw (keyboard, backing vocals) and Sam White (backing vocals).

Lead singer, Florence Welch, was an art-college drop-out, from Camberwell (London), who was discovered singing Motown covers in a nightclub toilet, drunk. ”The Machine” name originated with an in-joke between Welch and Summers. Musically, Florence + The Machine's sound is sometimes referred to as soul-inspired indie rock. Welch grew up listening to The White Stripes and Kate Bush and says she writes metaphorical songs that are "stories with consequences and weird morality issues."

2008
Florence + The Machine's music has received praise across the British music media, especially from the BBC, who played a large part in their rise to prominence, by bringing them into the spotlight as part of "BBC Introducing" (a program to support unsigned artists) - firstly at South By South West (SXSW) in Austin, Texas in March 2008 and later that year (Sept 2008) the band recorded a full session for the BBC at their Maida Vale studios.

2009 - 2010 - first awards and first studio album - "Lungs"
At the Brit Awards 2009, Florence + The Machine received the Critics' Choice Award at the Brits in the UK. The award was introduced in 2008 (when it was awarded to Adele) and focuses on new and emerging British talent, voted for by a panel of music industry experts.

The band's début album was "Lungs" (Jul 2009, Universal), preceded by third single Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up) (Jun 2009, Moshi Moshi). "Lungs" went on to become number one in the UK album charts in January 2010, and won the MasterCard British Album award at the 2010 Brits, where they performed a hugely popular collaboration, You've Got the Dirtee Love (live at The Brit Awards 2010) with Dizzee Rascal - a mix of You've Got the Love, the Candi Staton cover from "Dog Days Are Over" (Nov 2008, IAmSound), and Dizzee’s Dirtee Cash (Sept 2009, Dirtee Stank).

2011 - second studio album - "Ceremonials"
The second album "Ceremonials" (31 Oct 2011, Island) - with which Welch was inspired for the title and some themes from a '70s Super 8 film of an art installation, she recalls: "... this big procession of kind of coquette-style hippies and all these different coloured robes and masks, and it was all to do with colour, really saturated, brightly coloured pastas and balloons. I saw it a couple years ago, and it was called 'Ceremonials' and then, like, Roman numerals after it. And the word sort of stuck with me, and I think the whole idea of performance ...". The album is also influenced by hymns, poems and church bells.

2012 - MTV Unplugged album - "MTV Unplugged"
In 2012, the band released a live album - "MTV Unplugged" (Apr 2012, Universal) - as part of the MTV Unplugged series. It was filmed in December 2011 in New York’s oldest synagogue building, Angel Orensanz Center, with the band being backed by a ten-person choir.

2015 - third studio album - "How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful"
The band's long awaited third studio album is called "How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful". It was released on May 29, 2015 on Island Records.

2018 - fourth studio album - "High As Hope"
The band's fourth studio album is called "High As Hope". It was released on June 29, 2018 on Republic Records.

I suffer from fibromyalgia and it was like my entire life was snatched away. I’ve always been an athletic active person I’m very artistic and I love school I had so many ambitious dreams I love fashion and makeup also and always wanted to model. But after two years of chronic pain I was loosing myself. I could barely get around without help. I had mental and emotional breakdown constantly and constantly thought about suicide but I knew it was selfish. I felt like such a burden on my boyfriend who had to hold down the fort and take care of me. I would drink myself into blackouts almost every day. This was the only way I could get any sleep. Anxiety and depression started to consume me. I would have cut off my right leg if that meant the pain could stop. I didn’t want my friends of family to see nd this way so I avoided all social contact outside of my boyfriend. I tried so hard just to get through every day trying anything I could think of to find relief. Nothing was working. At some point I didn’t even have the energy to try to fix it anymore. Just thinking about the holidays or the beach or dancing (my main passion) made me break down. Everything that made my life fulfilling and everything I cared for I watched it all crumble away. It was agonizing to see my life slipping away with my sanity and have no way to stop it. I suffered cardiac arrest twice and had to be hospitalized from how high my pain levels were. When u live with chronic pain you are not living u are just surviving. My favorite things became background noise to my own agony. And if ur ever in this level of misery and agony you will realize just how quickly the things you love become meaningless. That’s the worst part feeling yourself become this miserable person. Becoming unrecognizable even to yourself. My boyfriend fought very hard to get me help from a doctor that would actually listen. That’s when I was finally diagnosed and treated and since then I’ve been able to take control of my condition. I do physical therapy and I take all my medication and I do meditation and heat therapy and stretches and everything my body will allow. Slowly but surely my pain has lessened. I still struggle to sleep hence the time I’m posting this lol but I have been able to have hope again. That was something I had lost and the helplessness and fear of my future and stress of not having any independence and control over my life and my body was eating me inside out. I just want to say that I feel for you. I would not be here if my boyfriend wasn’t around to hold me and help me. I would be dead and I wouldn’t have made it this far. I feel so grateful to have this chance at my normal life again. It’s been about a month since I was first treated and it’s hard I spend hours each day just working on stretching the strengthening my back leg and neck muscles this is the only thing outside of the medication that Has significantly helped me. I hope that you find relief sir and also a friend to support you through this because sometimes when we are at extremely dark and brutally painful times in our life that little ray of light is enough to keep us holding on and holding strong. If s person truly loves you they will be at your side in sickness and in health. I don’t mean just saying those words. Even if you go completely insane they should never abandon you or give up on you. My dogs treat me like their mama cause I always was the one taking care of them and the place. I couldn’t abandon them and my bf was fighting so hard for me I tried so hard to be strong but in a state like that being strong looks like having constant panic attacks and getting drunk and screaming then waking up in your own urine and in agony at 3 am then crying all night then doing it all over again. I didn’t feel strong at all. I felt so horrible. Pain has a way of blocking the ability to feel good or happy things. It brings out a lot of the bad parts of people. The people that leave will realize that when something happens to them and they need help and understanding and support. Just know that this may feel permanent but it’s not abs you can overcome this you can beat this. I wish you love and relief and healing ❤ reach out if you ever need to talk

It's so hard reading this thread. I understand that none of you asked for pain, disease or whatever it is bringing you down but as the wife of someone that suffered a spine injury almost three years ago, watching a once happy human become so miserable that he literally needs you every second but he also takes every pain, every frustration, aggravation, etc, out on you like you caused the injury, is also one of the hardest things to live with daily. Its a mental pain I can't even begin to describe. Half the time he is in so much pain he doesn't even see how he is treating me or our kids but I can totally understand why people leave. It's hard being a caregiver for someone who takes you for granted. I'm sorry to each of you that suffer but please find it in your hearts to forgive the spouses who couldn't handle it. Find healing in your hearts and by doing so may you each be blessed with healing in your physical bodies. We're all doing the best we can and life is fucking hard on all sides.

Truly. I saw her live after my friend lost her baby. We went a few months after as part of our healing. It was like being in a church or a temple when the spirit is moving. The people were kind. We hugged strangers and we sent our love to the heavens for our the angel boy we loved and never got to meet. We left in happy tears. Flo is a goddess.

The scene in which this played, you know the one with the multiple umbrellas,(great scene btw), anyway when ted comes out of the the building and he goes into a crowd of yellow umbrellas, I just LOVE the symbolicness and deepness of this scene. The multitude of yellow umbrellas means that his options are now open since he has to let go of the thought of robin. Whoever wrote this song I can feel your struggle due to my hope, suffering,and fear. I love this song and the background music. Because the song help me to let go of my pain and suffering into developing clean slat toward my problem and for my mistake. Nobody is not perfect, but I will damn sure try my hardest to do the right for me and GOD. I always thought she said “But why the hell am I gonna let it happen to me,” like at last deciding to take your life back from whatever is haunting you. I kind of still like the lyrics that way even if it’s not the real words.
