Never Let Me Go
Florence + the Machine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Looking up from underneath
Fractured moonlight on the sea
Reflections still look the same to me
As before I went under

And it's peaceful in the deep
Cathedral where you cannot breathe
No need to pray, no need to speak
Now I am under all

And it's breaking over me
A thousand miles down to the sea bed
Found the place to rest my head
(Never let me go, never let me go)
(Never let me go, never let me go)

And the arms of the ocean are carrying me
And all this devotion was rushing out of me
And the crashes are heaven for a sinner like me
But the arms of the ocean delivered me

Though the pressure's hard to take
It's the only way I can escape
It seems a heavy choice to make
But now I am under, oh

And it's breaking over me
A thousand miles down to the sea bed
Found the place to rest my head
(Never let me go, never let me go)
(Never let me go, never let me go)

And the arms of the ocean are carrying me
And all this devotion was rushing out of me
And the crashes are heaven for a sinner like me
But the arms of the ocean delivered me

And it's over and I'm going under
But I'm not giving up, I'm just giving in
I'm slipping underneath
So, so cold and so sweet

In the arms of the ocean, so sweet and so cold
And all this devotion, I never knew at all
And the crashes are heaven for a sinner released
In the arms of the ocean delivered me

(Never let me go, never let me go)
(Never let me go, never let me go)
Delivered me
(Never let me go, never let me go)
(Never let me go, never let me go)
(Never let me go, never let me go)
Delivered me
(Never let me go, never let me go)
(Never let me go, never let me go)
Delivered me
(Never let me go, never let me go)
And it's over and I'm going under
But I'm not giving up, I'm just giving in

I'm slipping underneath
Ooh, so cold and so sweet

Overall Meaning

The song "Never Let Me Go" by Florence + the Machine features emotive lyrics that speak mainly of surrender or loss of control, but most likely in a figurative sense. The opening line, "Looking up from underneath" suggests that the singer is at a low point or resting on the ocean or sea bed. The singer then describes the peacefulness that she feels while being submerged, comparing the experience to that of being in a cathedral, where there is no need to pray or speak.

The chorus ("And the arms of the ocean are carrying me...") like most of the lyrics of the song, insinuates that the singer is letting go, to relinquish her own control and letting the "arms of the ocean" take her. Although the experience of being deep underwater is peaceful, it is not easy, as mentioned in the line, "Though the pressure's hard to take, it's the only way I can escape." The singer is embracing the pain in order to escape or release something. Florence refers to herself metaphorically as a sinner therefore the idea of being delivered from that state resonates throughout the song, where one believes that giving in isn't giving up.

Overall, "Never Let Me Go" creates a sense of surrender to the unknown forces and the battles of one's self. Florence states that the ocean is so cold and so refreshing (sweet) like letting go is a necessary reprieve from the pressures of the world.

To this day, every fan of F+TM I meet (myself included) always shares a great affinity or personal story for Never Let Me Go. Almost to the point where it's impossible to put it into words. It doesn't matter if their new to their music or have been with them since the very begining, this song specifically just roots within their being and just stays there soothing and comforting them for years on end.

Throughout their entire beautiful discography there's just something about this specific song that just becomes inbedded within you and to which you can relate to with such ease and compassion.

It truly is a magnificant piece of art that was born out of such pain and suffering but has become overtime a staple of hope, love and understanding.

Seeing Florence deciding to preform Never Let Me Go during their Dance Fever tour fills me with such joy after all these years. The fact that she has reached the stage where she can accept the song and the lyrics she wrote and take heart in the fact that she now feels a sense of understanding for the lyrics is inspiring.

Never Let Me Go was born out of such tragic surcumstances from the prespective of a young and dispirited 25 year old woman who found herself suffocating within her life with no way out. And for nearly a decade Florence chose not to perform this song live as it caused her too much pain remembering that part of her past. But now she's reached a point in her life where she can look back at that young 25 year old who first wrote these lyrics with compassion and love and accept her for all her faults because they were and are apart of her and her story of growth in life and who she is as a person.

Before she sings Never Let Me Go as an encore during each of their shows while on their Dance Fever tour, she sincerely thanks the fans for "holding onto this song within our hearts until I was ready to sing it to you again". That alone is a testament to how much power this song has within her and to her fans, still to this day and I suspect forever more.

Regarding Never Let Me Go in 2014:
"I wasn't going to even put it on the album. But my little sister Grace, loved it so much she persuaded me to." - Florence Welch

Just like Florence, I used to go to this song in my lowest points, full of sadness and fear. Now, after almost 10 years, my process of healing allows me to listen to Never Let Me Go with love, happiness and peace.

At the San Diego show, she also mentioned in the beginning how we held this song safe in our hearts until she was ready again… and I was just sobbing the whole time. For a decade this song has been a safe place and safe landing for me, I’m glad she was able to look back in that time of her life with love 💛

This is my all time favourite song. I first heard it when flying to New Zealand and the flight was coming down in altitude as it nears the runway, but could see the waters beneath still. My mind just looking at the waters and picturing it carrying me.

I remember me and a good friend sitting on the beach in Spain, it was night and the water black and full of waves. We listened to that song in the end of my birthday party, just her and me and that melancholic tone. A beautiful sad anthem.
