Rabbit Heart
Florence The Machine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The looking glass so shiny and new
How quickly the glamor fades
I start spinning slipping out of time
Was that the wrong pill to take? (Raise it up)
You made a deal and now it seems you have to offer up
But will it ever be enough? (Raise it up, raise it up)
It's not enough (raise it up, raise it up)
Here I am a rabbit hearted girl
Frozen in the headlights
It seems I've made the final sacrifice

We raise it up, this offering
We raise it up

This is a gift, it comes with a price
Who is the lamb and who is the knife?
Midas is king and he holds me so tight
And turns me to gold in the sunlight

I look around but I can't find you (raise it up)
If only I could see your face (raise it up)
Instead of rushing towards the skyline (raise it up)
I wish that I could just be brave

I must become a lion hearted girl
Ready for a fight
Before I make the final sacrifice

We raise it up, this offering
We raise it up

This is a gift it, comes with a price
Who is the lamb and who is the knife?
Midas is king and he holds me so tight
And turns me to gold in the sunlight

Raise it up, raise it up
Raise it up, raise it up

And in the spring I shed my skin
And it blows away with the changing winds
The waters turn from blue to red
As towards the sky I offer it

This is a gift, it comes with a price
Who is the lamb and who is the knife?
Midas is king and he holds me so tight
And turns me to gold in the sunlight

This is a gift, it comes with a price
Who is the lamb and who is the knife?
Midas is king and he holds me so tight
And turns me to gold in the sunlight

This is a gift, it comes with a price
Who is the lamb and who is the knife?
Midas is king and he holds me so tight

And turns me to gold in the sunlight
This is a gift

Overall Meaning

"Rabbit Heart" is a song by Florence + the Machine that describes the struggle of holding onto identity and values in the face of temptation and pressure. The opening stanza refers to the metaphorical "looking glass," which could represent drugs or other harmful temptations that cause the "rabbit-hearted girl" to "start spinning slipping out of time." The line "raise it up" repeats throughout the song as if to question the worth of the offering and whether it will ever be enough. The chorus speaks to the pressure to conform and make sacrifices in order to succeed or please someone else, even if it means sacrificing one's own values or identity. The song seems to encourage the listener to find their own sense of bravery and to become a "lion hearted girl" before they make their "final sacrifice."

The line "Midas is king and he holds me so tight" alludes to the Greek legend of King Midas, who wished for everything he touched to turn to gold. The song suggests that this king in the form of temptation can hold and mold the singer to his own wishes. The final stanza speaks to transformation and renewal, but it also emphasizes the high cost of such gifts. The song seems to suggest that while these gifts may provide temporary satisfaction, they ultimately change the person's identity and create a gap between who they were and who they have become.

@FennezMarson

This is one of her best songs; it's a shame it didn't get more attention.

@aimeek1236

Please she has so many good songs.

@redjohn201

I'd argue that this was the song that actually brought her into the public eye. It was routinely played on Virgin radio.

@christineblaney98

First one I heard, it was big in the UK.

@someoneout-there2165

Florence I'm sure agrees with you considering it's on the set list for her 2022 tour. I love this song too, as a gay man I can say she is one of the most beautiful women in the world. Like a lot of her songs you can tell how much Stevie Nicks influenced her. But she also brings her own style. Best modern music artist. Period.
