2-hurricane drunk
Florence the Machine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

No walls can keep me protected
No sleep
Nothing in between me and the rain
And you can't save me now
I'm in the grip of a hurricane
I'm gonna blow myself away

I'm going out
I'm gonna drink myself to death
And in the crowd
I see you with someone else
I brace myself
'Cause I know it's going to hurt
But I like to think at least things can't get any worse

No hope
Don't want shelter
No calm
Nothing to keep me from the storm
And you can't hold me down
'Cause I belong to the hurricane
It's gonna blow this all away

I'm going out
I'm gonna drink myself to death
And in the crowd
I see you with someone else
I brace myself
'Cause I know it's going to hurt
But I like to think at least things can't get any worse

I hope that you see me
'Cause I'm staring at you
But when you look over
You look right through
Then you lean and kiss her on the head
And I never felt so alive
And so dead

I'm going out
I'm gonna drink myself to death
And in the crowd
I see you with someone else
I brace myself
'Cause I know it's going to hurt

I'm going out

I'm going out
I'm gonna drink myself to death
And in the crowd
I see you with someone else
I brace myself
'Cause I know it's going to hurt

I'm going out
I'm going out
I'm going out
I'm going out

I'm going out
I'm going out

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Florence and The Machine's Hurricane Drunk appear to be about a person who is going through a difficult time and feeling completely exposed to the elements. The singer feels like they have no protection from the rain and the storm, and no one can save them now. They feel like they are in the grip of a hurricane that will inevitably blow them away. Despite the overwhelming sense of hopelessness, the singer takes comfort in the fact that things can't get any worse.

In the midst of all this chaos, the singer becomes fixated on a past lover who is now with someone else. They hope that their lover will see them in the crowd, but they are ignored and their lover kisses the other person instead. This makes them feel both alive and dead, as they are reminded of what they have lost.

The reason for this video is because Florence and the Machine were originally gonna release this as their fourth single, but they were told they could do a better video for Dog Days Are Over, so they re-released that instead.

Lexamania

One or the other they could’ve chose the 4th single to be this bop.

Hypnoes Phere

florence is an amazing singer
so bad she doesnt get all what she deserves :(

Happip

Yup! That's exactly what happened...

Mauricio Fernández

Is this version slightly different from the album version? or its just my ear.

Lyditem

Sounds like she did some different improv in the last chorus too

scifisyko

The added violins in the last chorus are an improvement though, imo.

LordRandal1990

It is, it almost feels like a "cheapened" version to me though... maybe I'm too used to the original!

Tyler Petty

@ShortForAH03 It sounds almost like they took parts of a live recording and put those in the chorus instead. While I kinda get what they were going for it doesn't sound as polished as the studio version.

Also as much as I love this song, DDAO was far and away the best move they could have made.

thecrow

I love all the little musical differences between this video and the album version!
