From a series of minor parts, Pagny moved from cinema to TV. In 1985, he got co-writing credits for Michel Gerard's film "Blessure". Two years later, he recorded its first single "N'importe quoi". The success was immediate for this non-conformist.
He won a Victoire, a prestigious French music award, in 1989, yet the following year his second album bombed following a media boycott. "Don't bite the hand that feeds you"!
After a long period of reflection, he came back on top with his album "Rester Vrai" in 1994. In 1997, his album "Savoir aimer" brought him enormous popularity.
He now spends his time between France and Patagonia where he lives with his wife on a 4000 hectare farm pursuing his two passions: motor biking and fishing.
In 2004, Pagny took on an ambitious project: "Baryton", an album made up of titles of the traditional repertory with an amazing 70 member string orchestra and a 60 member choir under the direction of Yvon Cassar. This album was a true success.
In 2006 with the album "Abracadabra" Pagny returned to more of a pop style and delivered a superb album with poignant lyrics "Le Mur" or "Là où je t'emmènerai".
In 2007, "Pagny Chante Brel", launched a tribute album containing eleven songs by the great singer Jacques Brel.
In 2009, "C'est comme ça" came out as a spanish language album. Recorded in Miami with latin composers and musicians, this worthwhile effort showed the extend of his talent across language barriers.
On Nov 12th 2010, "Tout et son contraire" is Pagny's lucky 13th album. With a french album with songs penned by Grégoire, Calogéro, Pascal Obispo and Marc Lavoine, this album is more conventional fare for this now Miami Resident.
In 2010, Pagny also released Baryton. Gracias a la vida his first of two Spanish albums.
In 2013, Viellir avec toi, 2016 Habana his second spanish album, 2017 Le présent d'abord, 2018 Tout Simplement and 2019 Aime La vie.
Remarquably, since 1990 Pagny's albums have always reached the top 5 in the French market, a remarkable 30 year run.
Pagny is a recurring figure as a judge of the French version of the Voice.

Y a des marins qui chantent
Les rêves qui les hantent
Au large d'Amsterdam
Dans le port d'Amsterdam
Y a des marins qui dorment
Comme des oriflammes
Le long des berges mornes
Dans le port d'Amsterdam
Y a des marins qui meurent
Pleins de bière et de drames
Aux premières lueurs
Mais dans le port d'Amsterdam
Y a des marins qui naissent
Dans la chaleur épaisse
Des langueurs océanes
Dans le port d'Amsterdam
Y a des marins qui mangent
Sur des nappes trop blanches
Des poissons ruisselants
Ils vous montrent des dents
A croquer la fortune
A décroisser la Lune
A bouffer des haubans
Et ça sent la morue
Jusque dans le coeur des frites
Que leurs grosses mains invitent
A revenir en plus
Puis se lèvent en riant
Dans un bruit de tempête
Referment leur braguette
Et sortent en rotant
Dans le port d'Amsterdam
Y a des marins qui dansent
En se frottant la panse
Sur la panse des femmes
Et ils tournent et ils dansent
Comme des soleils crachés
Dans le son déchiré
D'un accordéon rance
Ils se tordent le cou
Pour mieux s'entendre rire
Jusqu'à ce que tout à coup
L'accordéon expire
Alors le geste grave
Alors le regard fière
Ils ramènent leur batave
Jusqu'en pleine lumière
Dans le port d'Amsterdam
Y a des marins qui boivent
Et qui boivent et reboivent
Et qui reboivent encore
Ils boivent à la santé
Des putains d'Amsterdam
De Hambourg et d'ailleurs
Enfin ils boivent aux dames
Qui leur donnent leur joli corps
Qui leur donnent leur vertu
Pour une pièce en or
Et quand ils ont bien bu
Se plantent le nez au ciel
Se mouchent dans les étoiles
Et ils pissent comme je pleure
Sur les femmes infidèles
Dans le port d'Amsterdam
Dans le port d'Amsterdam
The song "Amsterdam" by Florent Pagny is a cover of the original song written by Jacques Brel in 1964. The lyrics vividly paint a picture of the port of Amsterdam as a place of intense emotions and experiences for sailors. The first verse describes the sailors' songs expressing their dreams and fears while sailing offshore. The second verse tells of the tragic end some sailors meet, dying drunk and full of sorrow in the lonely piers. However, the port is also a place of new beginnings where sailors are born amid the dense warmth of oceanic desire.
The third verse features the sailors enjoying a hearty meal with fish and wine, boisterously boasting of their strength and daring exploits. The sailors' demeanor is described in the fourth verse, as they dance and rub their bellies against women's stomachs while accordions play in the background. Their laughter echoes across the port, and even the accordion gasps for air. In the last verse, the sailors continue to drink and salute the health of Amsterdam's prostitutes and women from other parts of the world in exchange for their bodies and virtue.
Line by Line Meaning
Dans le port d'Amsterdam
The setting of the song is in the busy port of Amsterdam
Y a des marins qui chantent
There are sailors singing their hearts out
Les rêves qui les hantent
Their dreams that they chase every day
Au large d'Amsterdam
Out at sea
Y a des marins qui dorment
Some sailors sleep soundly
Comme des oriflammes
As if they're flags waving in the wind
Le long des berges mornes
Along the dreary shorelines
Y a des marins qui meurent
Some sailors die
Pleins de bière et de drames
Full of beer and drama
Aux premières lueurs
At the crack of dawn
Mais dans le port d'Amsterdam
But in the port of Amsterdam
Y a des marins qui naissent
Some sailors are born
Dans la chaleur épaisse
In the thick heat
Des langueurs océanes
Of the ocean's longing
Y a des marins qui mangent
Some sailors eat
Sur des nappes trop blanches
On overly white tablecloths
Des poissons ruisselants
Fish that still drips with water
Ils vous montrent des dents
They show off their teeth
A croquer la fortune
To take a bite out of fortune
A décroisser la Lune
To bring the moon closer
A bouffer des haubans
To devour rigging lines
Et ça sent la morue
The smell of cod
Jusque dans le coeur des frites
Till the heart of the fries
Que leurs grosses mains invitent
That their thick hands invite
A revenir en plus
To keep coming back for more
Puis se lèvent en riant
Then they stand up laughing
Dans un bruit de tempête
With a sound like a storm brewing
Referment leur braguette
They zip their pants
Et sortent en rotant
And leave while burping
Y a des marins qui dansent
Some sailors dance
En se frottant la panse
Rubbing their bellies
Sur la panse des femmes
On the bellies of women
Et ils tournent et ils dansent
Spinning and dancing
Comme des soleils crachés
Like spit out suns
Dans le son déchiré
In the broken sound
D'un accordéon rance
Of an old, out-of-tune accordion
Ils se tordent le cou
They twist their necks
Pour mieux s'entendre rire
To hear each other laugh better
Jusqu'à ce que tout à coup
Until all of a sudden
L'accordéon expire
The accordion dies out
Alors le geste grave
Then the solemn gesture
Alors le regard fière
Then the proud look
Ils ramènent leur batave
They bring back their zeal
Jusqu'en pleine lumière
Into the bright light
Y a des marins qui boivent
Some sailors drink
Et qui boivent et reboivent
They drink and drink again
Et qui reboivent encore
And still drink more
Ils boivent à la santé
They drink to the health
Des putains d'Amsterdam
Of Amsterdam's prostitutes
De Hambourg et d'ailleurs
Of Hamburg and elsewhere
Enfin ils boivent aux dames
Lastly, they drink to the ladies
Qui leur donnent leur joli corps
Who give them their beautiful bodies
Qui leur donnent leur vertu
Who give them their virtue
Pour une pièce en or
For a piece of gold
Et quand ils ont bien bu
And when they've had enough
Se plantent le nez au ciel
They stick their noses up in the sky
Se mouchent dans les étoiles
They blow their noses in the stars
Et ils pissent comme je pleure
And they pee like I cry
Sur les femmes infidèles
On unfaithful women
Dans le port d'Amsterdam
In the port of Amsterdam
