In all fairness learning another language becomes very hard after reaching a certain age. It’s from 5 months old to puberty (if I remeber correctly) that is the key time to learn language. This is why people from multilingual communities can speak all the languages of the area so easily. Pretty much after puberty is when it starts to become hard and it only gets harder as you get older. That’s why it’s usually the kids of the immigrants that learn the language of the area.

When I was a child and my father was station in Germany in the early 90s. I was an American child that had to learn the German language, I was fine with that cuz I was 5 when we first got their so learning a new language was fun for me. We we had to move to France the next yr it was the same story, learn fucking French, it was the polite thing to do. If u saw Americans then speaking English is ok. But if it in America be fucking polite and learn our language, we have to learn and adapt to other languages if we go out of country why can't some of these foreigners to the same??

When you say "our language" and "foreigners" which language and who are you talking about? I'm asking because I don't want to say I agree or disagree with you until I know exactly what you mean. If my first thought is what you meant then I agree that more Americans should be willing to learn a new language before going to a country like Germany, France, or Japan. It is ridiculous that so many Americans are complaining about people not knowing English before coming to America and then when they are the ones going to a new country they won't bother learning a new language and instead pretty much demand that everyone else learn their language.

It's offensive and a slap in the face that we have to learn when going to their country but when they come to our country they refuse to learn a speak a little english. I like learning new languages but I'm sick and tired of the double standards that go around. It is a common sign of respect that foreigners fail to show when visiting English prominent countries like England and America. I'm not complaining, clearly u haven't traveled rlly, u wouldn't have that same attitude if that was the case.

Ashley Penfield Foreigners do have to learn English when they come to America. At least if they want to be recognized as an American citizen. Also, I have not traveled outside of America and my understanding from the people I've meet and talked to is that most people that are simply visiting a country that they have never been to is that they will find someone to translate for them and will not bother to learn the language of the country they are visiting.

CodeRed99911 Our language aka Native language or the language you learned when you were born. Foreigners aka People who are not native to the land/country they are visiting/taking up residence within. When you travel to another country that doesn't speak your native language or any language that is not known to you, it's common courtesy to have a device whether it's mechanical or a simple book/guide that allows you to communicate with the people of the country/land you are visiting. EVERYBODY.. not just Americans should do this when traveling to visit or even take up residence in a country/land that doesn't speak the travelers' native language so it stifles the frustration that spawns from language barriers.

Americans aren't complaining about people not knowing how to speak English when people come to America.. Americans are complaining about people not making attempts to establish a way to communicate so everyone can be helped with whatever they may need. If someone came knocking on your door and started speaking a language unknown to you.. it would be inconvenient to force you to learn their language instead of them taking the time to learn yours when they're the ones coming to your country.

the american english language is incredibly hard for foreigners to learn, we're the only language that has set rules for spelling, then words that break those rules, and not to mention slang, accents, regional speech, etc. my best friend was from Germany, she could speak english just fine, but spelling it was another thing, German according to her, is spelled like it sounds, so she did the same for english. i had to help her learn the complex rules, and it still wasn't doing much to help.

Tbh, I do the whole pretending someone is calling or texting me thing... not because I'm trying to be cool or anything, but because I work overnights and pretending to be popular reduces the chances of some creepy dude pulling up to me at the bus stop and insisting I hop into their car. I completely agree with Foamy's statement about learning the English language. It's like, I'm in the drive threw ordering an #7 and when I get to the window, they say 'Did you want a #3?' THREE, people! How the fuck do you confuse 7 with 3?! So I say, no. I ordered a #7 and they say 'But we already have the #3. Would you like that instead?' English is one of the hardest languages to learn, especially if you're thirty or so (because as you age, your ability to learn decreases). I laud the people who attempt to speak English and get even something English-sounding out. Also, one reason they have so many languages on food products is not to indulge non-English-speaking immigrants, but to indulge foreign tourists. You know, tourism. One of the biggest income fields America has.

That's no excuse. If I wanted to live in France, I would at the very least learn to speak French as fluently as possible before hand. Learning a new language is hard PERIOD! If they don't have the time to learn, then they don't have the time to move here. Also, the US may not have an official language but we aren't exactly known for speaking Chinese.

Totally agree with the english..i fricken work with an old(i guess she's 40 idk, w/e) at subway, and you cant understand a damn word she says...it's fookin annoying. A lot of people complain about here. And sometimes we get customers who dont understand english and take forever to order and dont even know what they want or what to order. And it's sad (and I have seen it many times) When they have their kids translate for them...LAZY

It's actually been scientifically proven that the older someone gets the harder it is to learn a new language. Also the english/American language is among one of the hardest to learn because the grammar structure is different from most of the world. An immigrant family will usually have the children speaking english first because it is easier for them. Just saying.

yeah foamy is right about all but one thing: we have a context of confusing languages. my friend is from Ukraine and he told me that his dad had trouble recognizing "here" and "hear", "they're" "there" and "their". also, Americans makes up too much slang. it turns out that foreigners speak better English and with proper context then we do with our own language. so we Americans cant really brag and force others to speak good English when we cant ourselves. just my opinion :)

Was a different time when this was animated and performed. Where I’m from, it’s a requirement by law to learn our language before you can even be considered for residency. Maybe because my country has always been this way and all the countries around mine, 100% of my continent has also always been this way, I don’t see this as a bad thing. I feel more like it’s nearly hyperbolic empathy than genuine. Like the idea of being empathetic is more important than being constructively empathetic and that empathy making society better.

I must correct you once more, while you are not restricted constantly from speaking foreign languages, there are manner restrictions that may be applied in circumstances, such that you would only be allowed to speak in English to receive a given service et cetera. Freedom of speech generally protects content, not method, so long as there are "ample alternative channels" for the information to be conveyed.

Ok foreign languages are very important cultural heritages ,but they can be very annoying. Let's look at it in a business point of view. I've been a cashier for 3 years and i've ran in Greeks,Italians,Dutch,Germans, and many others that can't speak a bit of english and it makes a simple transaction a long ordeal.The only thing that everybody seems to know by heart are numbers.They can't hello but they can breakout $21.59 down to the penny

@WrinryRockBellFMA The McDonald's Coffee Case was a legitimate lawsuit. You just stated about 4 things about the case that aren't true -- it was a woman, not a man. It was inside a parked car (not moving), and she was in the passenger seat. The suit was not about a "warning label", but that McDonald's corporate standards for coffee temperature was too high and the cups were poorly designed and prone to dangerous spills.

That's fine, but let courts decide case by case if the person is at fault for their own injury. There is no need to introduce "tort reform" to protect corporations from lawsuits. They want those laws to protect them from REAL lawsuits. In the case of the McDonald's case, the plaintiff proved that the coffee was being served in flimsy containers at temperatures that people were not aware could cause serious burns if spilled. They were forced to change their business practices because of it.

I have a friend who visits, and like 95% of the time he's on his phone. And you can't talk to him, because he can't text and listen. Then you have to wait until he's done texting, and he gets a message like 10 seconds later. This happens EVERY time he comes over.

@frostbiteinOhio Most immigrants do speak enough English to get by. They just assume that Americans also know enough of other languages to be able to attend to them. America is one of the few countries where the majority of the citizens are not at least bilingual, if not polyglots. And the modern English that we speak derives from about 1/3 ancient Germanic spoken by the tribes that defeated the Roman empire, 1/3 Latin, and 1/3 mix of other languages (for example, bourgeois and chocolate).

I don't understand lawyers either. It's like they give away their souls. Thrs a guy who is clearly guilty of whatever crime they committed. Let's say murder for simplicity. Let's say all the evidence stacks around him, he assaulted an officer, and, to top it off, in interrogation, he flat out said "I killed that person." alot of it stems from the citizenship test, rather than focusing on the speaking English, the test comprises mostly of American history and comprehensive understanding of the constitution. well that's great, but Jose is not coming to America to become a professor of american history, hes going to be a mechanic or something, and English is required for most manual labor jobs. except for taxi drivers, apparently they don't need to speak ANY language

If you are at a restaurant and people are calling you constantly, that can be irritating to hear the ringtone go off constantly. At least put it on quiet mode. Most phones anymore have a setting for their quiet mode that will cause the phone to ring anyway if the same number calls two or more times within just a few minutes, interpreting it as an emergency call. Either that, or most also have a feature where you can set up certain important phone numbers that will ring through even in quiet mode while silencing everything else. That way the people who really need you can still get a hold of you.

Yeah but this video is like. 11-12 years old. Cell phones have come a long way since then.

I only like foamy the squirrel a little bit know why he thinks he's helping the world by ranting in a really rude,mean, and unhelpful way which I don't like. You don't see him donate to charity, or volunteer and I'm pretty sure you made him this way on purpose. But I think if Foamy is supposed to be a jerk he should be a total jerk not someone in the middle of being good and bad. Yes I've seen some videos where he tries to kill someone but that doesn't make him a total jerk.

I was reading in class after some ghetto rat (mind u I 2 am black but am suburban) and after I was done reading she said u sound smart. JUST BECAUSE IM ARTICULATE DOESNT MEAN IMMA GENIUS (though I am smart) IT MEANS I SOUND FREAKING NORMAL. GOSH NOT EVERY BLACK PERSON USES THE TERM "The baby fatha" when talkinh about their friend's Dad!

It's really sad that there are people who actually believe that everyone should speak English here. There is no national language of the United States! What happened to the idea of diversity? Most of the citizens of almost every other country in the world speak at least two languages, but Americans are too lazy to do the same, and so they expect everyone to cater to their laziness. (I am a bilingual American, for the record.)
