My Babe
Foghat Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm talkin' 'bout my baby, not your baby
Say my babe, she's so fine
I'm talkin' 'bout my baby, not your baby
Say my babe, she's so fine
I love to love my baby, love to love her all the time

Well, I love her, don't you love her?
Say I love her, do you hear?
I love her, don't you love her?
Say I love her, do you hear?
Upsets my soul, she whispers sweet words in my ear

I love the way she walks
I love the way she talks
She makes me feel so good just like a young man should
She never make me cry; that's why she's my babe, she's my babe

Nothin' could be better than to see her in a sweater
And a real tight skirt, that don't fit,
Nothin' could be better than to see her in a sweater
And a tight skirt that don't fit
She wants to have fun, people let me tell you that's it!

I love the way she walks (Strut that stuff)
I love the way she talks (Vachement bien)
She makes me feel so good (feel so good)
Just like a young man should (feel so good)
She never make me cry; that's why she's my babe, she's my babe
Alright!

I love the way she walks
I love the way she talks
She makes me feel so good, just like a young man should
She never make me cry; that's why, oh, baby, that's why

Talkin' 'bout my baby, not your baby
Say my baby, not your baby
Say my babe, she's so F-I-N-E

I love the way she walks (Strut your stuff)
I love the way she talks (Vachement bien)
She makes me feel so good (feel so good)
Just like a young man should (feel so good)
She never makes me cry, that's why, oh!

I love the way she walks (She's so fine)
I love the way she talks

Overall Meaning

Foghat's song "My Babe" is a classic rock track with a bluesy touch. The lyrics express a fondness for the singer's lover, referred to as "my babe", and the desire to love and protect her. The opening lines establish the focus of the song: "I'm talkin' 'bout my baby, not your baby/Say my babe, she's so fine." The repetition of the phrase "my babe" throughout the song creates a sense of ownership that reflects the singer's intense feelings for his lover.

The chorus features a call-and-response exchange, with the singer asking the listener if they love his babe as much as he does. This reinforces the idea that the singer's love for his babe is unique and intense. The line "Upsets my soul, she whispers sweet words in my ear" suggests that the singer is deeply affected by his lover's words and actions.

The second half of the song shifts towards more physical descriptions of the singer's lover, with lines like "Nothin' could be better than to see her in a sweater/And a tight skirt that don't fit." While the objectification of women in rock music is a well-known issue, "My Babe" doesn't cross any particular boundaries in this regard. The focus is still on the singer's love and admiration for his lover, and the physical descriptions are presented as a natural extension of his attraction to her.

Overall, "My Babe" is a catchy rock song with an affectionate and romantic message. It's a testament to the enduring popularity of blues and rock music, and a catchy tune that evokes a simpler time in music history.

To this day, every time I hear Fool For the City on the radio I expect it to be followed by My Babe, just like it did on my 8-track way back when.

@20spotty01 I had the same 8 track but I only played one track. Track A and when it went to track b I switched it 3 times to get back to track a. Now I have dig recording of Slow Ride on my computer and the live album. I would imagine the women got off on the second verse. Wasn't sure what the words were the first few times.
