Mark Dirne (guitar) played 'Wild Rover' during the christmascelebration on his highschool. He had heard this song from the Dropkick Murphy's. Pim van Bussel (singer) was near and started to sing along. Some time before, he'd gotten some music from Simon Berg (bassguitar), with the same genre. Simon joined the two with his bassguitar. As the people near them reacted with so much enthousiasm, they decided to play this song on 'Klein Kunstje', the school's yearly opportunity for its students to play in the local theater.
After the christmas holidays, the three friends had the idea there was something missing. An accordeon would be nice, and that's how they found Ben Groenen (who plays both accordeon and violin).
When they listened to the Dromkick Murphy's even more, they noticed they also would need a Tin Whistle. Frans Kuijpers (Tin Whistle and Saxophone) was recruted and reacted with a lot of enthousiasm.
The group was complete now and they decided to sign up for the auditions for 'Klein Kunstje'.
While rehearsing, the band realised they missed something that would indicate the rhythm. They soon found Joris Barnier (playing marching drum and djembe), who was in the jury of the 'Klein Kunstje'-project. He already was a pretty good friend of the boys and decided to help them out. The auditions were a success and the band performed successfully on 'Klein Kunstje 2002' and was the first band ever to perform an extra because the audience asked for it.
After a while, it started to bother Pim that a bandname still hadn't really been chosen yet. 'The Folkies' seemed too childish. Some funny person suggested 'The Alcoholics'. Pim decided to combine this and gave the band the name 'The Folkaholics'.
The boys were encouraged to continue playing their music. They doubted, because two of them would go study elsewhere. But after some consultation, they decided to continue this anyway. Immediately, they were asked for two gigs (one at school during the graduation event and one during a fashion weekend somewhere in Veldhoven). New songs had to be written and rehearsal was needed.
These gigs also were a success and Simon contacted a local Music Café (Jerry's Music Café), where amateur bands could preform. They were granted permission to play on an Irish Evening on the 7th of December 2002.
This also was a great success: the Café was absolutely crammed and the audiance reacted with enthousiasm.
After that night, it all went very fast. The Folkaholics toured through diverse parts of the country. The audience reacted really good everywhere.
In November 2003, they returned back home. The group was motivated to play and perform more and even record a demo-cd, which they would send to cafés and gigs, to promote themselves.
Somewhere in January 2004, in Jerry's Music Café, they recorded their preformance for a demo-cd. The mixing and printing took a lot of time, but in June 2004, it could finally be presented to the audience.
With this demo, the Folkaholics performed a lot in the Netherlands and Belgium to present their 'Folk 'n Loll'. That didn't go unnoticed and soon, they were invited to play on the rather large Folkwoods Festival in Nuenen, the Netherlands. They performed there in August 2005. This also was a great success.

Wild Rover

And I've spent all my money on whiskey and beer
But now I'm returning with gold in great store
And I never will play the wild rover no more
And it's no, nay, never
No nay never no more
Will I play the wild rover
I went into an alehouse I used to frequent
And I told the landlady my money was spent
I asked her for credit, she answered me nay,
Such custom as yours I can have any day
And it's no, nay, never
No nay never no more
Will I play the wild rover
No never, no more
I took from my pocket ten euros bright
And the landlady's eyes opened wide with delight
She says I'd have whiskies and wines of the best
And the words that she told me were only in jest
And it's no, nay, never
No nay never no more
Will I play the wild rover
No never, no more
I'll go home to my parents, confess what I've done
And I'll ask them to pardon their prodigal son
And when they've caressed me as oft times before
Then I never will play the wild rover no more
And it's no, nay, never
No nay never no more
Will I play the wild rover
No never, no more
(C) Folkaholics (traditional)
The lyrics to Folkaholics' rendition of "Wild Rover" speak of someone who has been living a wild and reckless life, spending all their money on whiskey and beer. However, they have now returned with gold in great store and have decided to turn their life around. The verses are structured such that the individual goes into an alehouse they used to frequent and asked the landlady for credit. The landlady refused, and the singer responded by taking out ten euros from their pocket to buy their drinks. The landlady jokingly stated that they could have whiskies and wines of the best, but the singer had already made up their mind to turn away from their old habits.
The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "And it's no, nay, never, No nay never no more, Will I play the wild rover, No never, no more,"' indicating that the character has made a firm decision to change their ways and will never go back to their old life of reckless drinking and wasting their money.
Overall, the song is a great representation of how one can make the decision to turn their life around and leave old habits behind. It speaks of a sense of redemption and the desire for a better life.
