Friend of a Friend
Foo Fighters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

He needs a quiet room
With a lock to keep him
In its just a quiet room
And he's there
He plays an old guitar
With a coin found by the phone
It was his friends guitar
That he played
Hm mm mm

He's never been in love
But he knows just what love is
He says never mind
And no one speaks

He thinks he drinks too much
Cause when he tells his two best friends
I think I drink too much

No one speaks
No one speaks
No one speaks
Hm hm mm mm mm hm hm mm

He plays an old guitar
With a coin found by the phone
It was his friends guitar

That he played
When he plays
No one speaks
No one speaks

And he plays
No one speaks

Overall Meaning

The song "Friend of a Friend" by Foo Fighters tells a story of a person who is looking for solitude and finds refuge in a quiet room with a lock. It seems that this character is going through a personal struggle and is seeking peace and quiet to deal with it. He plays an old guitar that belonged to a friend, and this seems to offer him some solace. The lyrics convey a sense of sadness and loneliness. The character has never been in love, but he knows what love is. When he says he drinks too much, nobody speaks, which suggests that he feels like his friends aren't really listening to him. The repetition of "no one speaks" reinforces the idea that the character is disconnected from others.

The lyrics of "Friend of a Friend" are open to interpretation, but one possible reading is that the song is about dealing with depression and isolation. The character seems to be struggling with alcohol and may feel like he is not being heard by those around him. The old guitar represents a link to a friend who is not present, and playing it provides the character with some comfort. The quiet room with a lock may be a metaphor for a state of mind that he can't escape from. Overall, the lyrics suggest a sense of sadness and alienation.

This song is allegedly about himself, Kurt and Krist.

A quiet room, Kurt
An old guitar, Dave
He drinks too much, Krist.
Beautiful, really.

Edit:
Never been in love, Kurt.
No one speaks could be referring to all three of them or one of them individually.
I could be wrong and this could be about Kurt himself, I dunno.

I really like how Dave painted a picture with the lyrics in this song. First line in the first verse, Kurt. Second line in the song, Dave playing in the room. Next line is Kurt again. I drink too much...when he tells his two best friends is Krist. What a great picture of that time.
Dave is a really great songwriter. Hence why Foos are still here.

Dave still plays this song like its his first time writing it. He never loses the meaning when he sings it with his soul.

This is one of the greatest songs ever written IMO. Simple chord progression, simple to understand lyrics yet super heavy on both fronts.

Rip Kurt. 26 years ago today we lost the 🐐 I wasn’t alive when he was or when he died but his music has definitely impacted my life and I can definitely say Kurt saved my life. God bless you 🙏🏻
