All my life
Foo Fighters (USA) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

All my life I've been searching for something
Something never comes never leads to nothing
Nothing satisfies but I'm getting close
Closer to the prize at the end of the rope
All night long I dream of the day

When it comes around and it's taken away
Leaves me with the feeling that I feel the most
Feel it come to life when I see your ghost

Calm down don't you resist
You've such a delicate wrist
And if I give it a twist
Something to hold when I lose my grip
Will I find something in there
To give me just what I need
Another reason to bleed
One by one hidden up my sleeve (one by one hidden up my sleeve)

Don't let it go to waste, I love it but I hate the taste
Weight keepin' me down
Don't let it go to waste, I love it but I hate the taste
Weight keepin' me down

Will I find a believer
Another one who believes
Another one to deceive
Over and over down on my knees
If I get any closer
And if you open up wide
And if you let me inside
On and on I've got nothing to hide (on and on I've got nothing to hide)

Don't let it go to waste, I love it but I hate the taste
Weight keepin' me down
Don't let it go to waste, I love it but I hate the taste
Weight keepin' me down

All my life I've been searching for something
Something never comes never leads to nothing
Nothing satisfies but I'm getting close
Closer to the prize at the end of the rope

All night long I dream of the day
When it comes around and it's taken away
Leaves me with the feeling that I feel the most
Feel it come to life when I see your ghost

Then I'm done done on to the next one
Done done and I'm on to the next one
Done done and I'm on to the next one
Done done and I'm on to the next one
Done done and I'm on to the next one
Done done and I'm on to the next one
Done done and I'm on to the next one
Done I'm done and on to the next

Done done on to the next one
Done I'm done and on to the next one
Done done on to the next one
Done I'm done and on to the next

Don't let it go to waste, I love it but I hate the taste
Weight keepin' me down
Don't let it go to waste, I love it but I hate the taste
Weight keepin' me down

Done done on to the next one
And I'm done and on to the next

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "All My Life" by Foo Fighters speak of the singer's constant search for something that never seems to materialize. He speaks of how nothing ever satisfies him, but he feels like he's getting closer to what he wants. He details how he dreams of the day when he finally gets what he's been longing for, only to have it taken away from him, leaving him with an insatiable feeling. He admits to having something hidden up his sleeve and how he loves it, but he hates the taste it leaves, like a weight keeping him down.

The lyrics further suggest that he longs to find someone who shares his beliefs but also alludes to his deception towards others, where he goes down on his knees trying to get closer to them. The song's conclusion is that the singer acknowledges he is always on to the next thing, never quite satisfied with what he has or finds.

The lyrics have a sense of longing and desperation, with a theme of dissatisfaction and insatiability. The chorus, in particular, with the line, "Don't let it go to waste, I love it but I hate the taste, weight keepin' me down," conveys a sense of paradox, where the singer wants something desperately, but at the same time, it's weighing him down. Overall, the song has a powerful and emotional impact, as it speaks to a universal feeling of wanting more but never quite being satisfied.

I was a 17yr old young black teen. I smoked a joint and sat down In my room and MTV just happen to be showing this... As someone who grew up on rap.. it was the most awesome thing I had seen. I mean you couldnt pick my jaw up from the ground. Watching them chop on there axes like that.. Long story short this was the first rock album I ever purchased and it was the beginning of my 20yr journey of the genre. Favorite band no question..

@jennygroom73

As a now 50 year old white lady......i felt the same way listening to Ice-T new jack hustler (ok, might not be the best reference, but i loved it.). You picked a good one for your 20 year journey into the foos. i hope you can respect that after i smoked a joint, i felt the same way. Cause once.....i was a 17 year old coal miners daughter going to school strung out on nirvana. This song was kinda different than what the meth heads around me listened to. i get it.
