TitleTrakk.com’s Tracy Darlington describes the sound of the band thus: “Think Delirious? meets Downhere. Throw in some early U2, a dash of Edison Glass, and a slight melancholy feel, and you have their winning recipe.” This sound is coupled with a talent-riddled collection of honest and poignant lyrics.
The band was formed out of local youth ministry in 1998 when the main person responsible for worship left the Church. Foolish Things stepped out in faith and volunteered to fill the gap, before any of the members knew how to play an instrument.
"We have absolutely nothing to boast about. We never set out to do the band thing. We're just a group of friends who wanted to serve our youth group." Nate Phillips.
Their name is taken from 1 Corinthians 1:27-29. From their humble, local roots Foolish Things went on to win the “Seminar in the Rockies” Christian band competition in 2000 and were signed to InPop Records. Since then they have opened for other notable Christian artists including Skillet, Building429 and Jennifer Knapp.
The vision of the band is perhaps best described by bassist Nate Phillips: “From the beginning, we’ve used music as a tool to strengthen and challenge the body of Christ, as well as to reach out to the lost. We will stay true to this mission by loving people with music and writing songs that are relevant and real. Our relationship with Christ is a journey with ups and downs, and the songs will reflect our journey.”
After several independent releases, they released Let’s Not Forget The Story in 2005 (re-released with InPop in 2006). The CD included Can’t Believe, which suite101.com’s Kevan Breitinger describes as “what Van Gogh would play if he had a guitar” and Spirit Come which he describes as “infectious pop rock”. Their sophmore album with InPop entitled Even Now was released in January 2008 with tracks such as Fly and Shooting In The Dark.
Foolish Things have also launched a tour called “Three Who Need” which seeks to provide a place for Christians to reach their friends by encouraging them to pray for three friends and bring them to the concert to hear both the band and the Gospel.
This Love

You love the way you do
But i can't find a motive for the things
That i have seen in you
Where does it come from?
Where does it grow?
This love that needs no reason
The love that you have shown to me
You sought me with love and persistance
You boght and purchased forgivenes
With your own love
What is this love?
What is this love?
In my small mind couldn't find the place
Where you love grew
But i was blind
And failed to see that very place was you
Where does it come from?
Where does it grow?
This love that needs no reason
The love that you have shown to me
You thought me into existance
You sought me with love and persistance
You bought me and purchased forgiveness
With your own love
What is this love?
What is this love?
We are still your enemies
You took your bar unfirm, at ease
In innocence you died that day
To pay the price we should've paid
And i'm amazed to ponder how
Your eyes can see me blameless now
The God who doesn't need a thing
Has crushed his son to offer me new life
You're where it comes from
You're where it grows
This love that needs no reason
The love that you have shown
You're where it comes from
You're where it grows
This love that needs no reason
The love that you have shown to me
The lyrics of This Love by Foolish Things delve into the concept of unconditional love that is often hard to fathom. The song talks about the inability of the singer to comprehend the reasons for their lover's love or the motivation behind it. They question the origins of such an indefinable love and its growth, but the answer, as they eventually realize, lies within the lovers themselves, and the powerful emotions that they harbor.
As the song progresses, it takes on a more spiritual and religious tone, referring to the immense love of God for humanity. The singer is still unable to understand how God could forgive humanity, still being their enemy, despite the good that God had done for them. The lyrics go on to describe how Christ took the burden of humanity's sins upon himself, saving all his people.
This Love is a song about pure, accepting love and gratitude for the people that surround us, and the seemingly inexplicable love bestowed upon us by a higher power.
