TitleTrakk.com’s Tracy Darlington describes the sound of the band thus: “Think Delirious? meets Downhere. Throw in some early U2, a dash of Edison Glass, and a slight melancholy feel, and you have their winning recipe.” This sound is coupled with a talent-riddled collection of honest and poignant lyrics.
The band was formed out of local youth ministry in 1998 when the main person responsible for worship left the Church. Foolish Things stepped out in faith and volunteered to fill the gap, before any of the members knew how to play an instrument.
"We have absolutely nothing to boast about. We never set out to do the band thing. We're just a group of friends who wanted to serve our youth group." Nate Phillips.
Their name is taken from 1 Corinthians 1:27-29. From their humble, local roots Foolish Things went on to win the “Seminar in the Rockies” Christian band competition in 2000 and were signed to InPop Records. Since then they have opened for other notable Christian artists including Skillet, Building429 and Jennifer Knapp.
The vision of the band is perhaps best described by bassist Nate Phillips: “From the beginning, we’ve used music as a tool to strengthen and challenge the body of Christ, as well as to reach out to the lost. We will stay true to this mission by loving people with music and writing songs that are relevant and real. Our relationship with Christ is a journey with ups and downs, and the songs will reflect our journey.”
After several independent releases, they released Let’s Not Forget The Story in 2005 (re-released with InPop in 2006). The CD included Can’t Believe, which suite101.com’s Kevan Breitinger describes as “what Van Gogh would play if he had a guitar” and Spirit Come which he describes as “infectious pop rock”. Their sophmore album with InPop entitled Even Now was released in January 2008 with tracks such as Fly and Shooting In The Dark.
Foolish Things have also launched a tour called “Three Who Need” which seeks to provide a place for Christians to reach their friends by encouraging them to pray for three friends and bring them to the concert to hear both the band and the Gospel.
forgive me
Foolish Things Lyrics

Grosser than the things confessed and wreaking with emptiness
Forgive me when religion's been my God
And all that I do denies You are there but You're there
Did I forget You were listening?
Could I deceive the One
Who's given me my heart?
Forgive me when I've come to pray to You
Just to get it done before I run away from You
Forgive me when I've merely said the words
And severed devotion from all of my motions
Did I forget You were listening?
Could I deceive the One
Who's given me my heart?
Did I forget You were listening?
Could I deceive the One
Who's given me my heart?
It took Your blood to bring me to the place
Where I can meet You face to face
So let me claim the promise true
And bring myself to talk to You as real
Talk to You as real
Did I forget You were listening?
Yeah, could I deceive the One
Who's given me my heart?
Did I forget what You'd given me?
Did I forget You were living in my heart?
Living in my heart
Forgive me when my prayers have come to You
Grosser than the things confessed and wreaking with emptiness
In "Forgive Me" by Foolish Things, the singer is pleading with God for forgiveness for not being fully present and committed in their prayers. The lyrics suggest that the singer has been going through the motions of prayer without truly dedicating themselves to the act, and may have even prioritized religious practices over their relationship with God. The lyrics "Forgive me when religion's been my God, and all that I do denies You are there but You're there" suggest that the singer has lost sight of God amidst the rituals and rules of their faith.
The lyrics "It took Your blood to bring me to the place, where I can meet You face to face" refer to the Christian belief in Jesus' sacrifice on the cross, and the idea that his blood atoned for the sins of humanity, making it possible for people to have a personal relationship with God. The final verse "So let me claim the promise true, and bring myself to talk to You as real" indicates the singer's desire to reconnect with God in a more authentic way.
Overall, "Forgive Me" is a song about humility, repentance, and the struggle to maintain a meaningful connection with God amid the distractions and responsibilities of everyday life.
