Independent
Forces Of Evil Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Will you please hold my hand?
I can't, I'm independent
I want to be your man
You can't, I'm independent

It's not that we don't know
Why can't you let it go?
[Chorus]
She's independent
She doesn't need your help
She's independent
She'll do it by herself
She's independent
Tries not to let it show
She's independent
I hate that stupid 'ho

I'll call you on the phone
You can't, I'm independent
Let me know when you're home
I can't, I'm independent

It's not that we don't know
Why can't you let it go?

[Chorus]

I hate this game we're playing
I can't hear what she's saying
Telling me that she is right and I am always wrong
Everything she does is only just because
She's clinically insane!

She's independent
doesn't need your help
She's independent
She'll do it by herself
She's independent
Tries not to let it show
She's independent
I hate that stupid 'ho
I hate that stupid 'ho
I hate that stupid 'ho

I hate that stupid 'ho
Just let it go

Overall Meaning

The Forces of Evil's song "Independent" talks about a situation where one person is trying to reach out to another for a little help and support but the other person refuses to do so. The refusal is not because they do not care or they do not know what to do. The other person is deliberately trying to show how independent they are and how they can go about their lives without the help of anyone, including a significant other.

The story in the song is from the male's perspective, where he wants to reach out to his girlfriend or significant other but keeps getting rebuffed. He tries to hold their hand or call them, but they always refuse because they are independent. The chorus repeats this same message over and over and even goes as far as calling the person "stupid 'ho" because they are pushing others away with their need to be independent.

The song highlights the importance of being independent, but also shows how it can be taken too far. It is okay to be independent, to be self-sufficient, and to have the confidence to take care of oneself, but it is not okay to push people away that care about you. At times, a helping hand or someone to lean on is necessary, and being independent does not have to mean that one cannot turn to someone when they need them.
