Foreign Air is the creation of Jesse Clasen and Jacob Michael, who met in the late 2000s when their respective bands played on the same bill. They took interest in each other's talents and stayed in touch over the years. Hailing from North Carolina and Washington, D.C., respectively, the collaboration came to fruition in early 2015 after the pair, who were in between projects at the time, began trading ideas via Dropbox. The duo released their first single, "Free Animal," that November, followed by an EP, For the Light, in September 2016. A series of stand-alone singles arrived over the next few years, including 2017's "Lying" and 2019's "Wake Me Up."

I hope I land on two feet
Clueless up until today
Writing off everyone that tells me anything
Stubborn locks of gold
Hiding my face inside of my head
Running my mouth but not telling you how I feel
How I feel
Until now, I've kept this to myself
I've been sleeping right through it all
It feels good to finally figure out
I needed this all along
You're waking me up
Everything feels different
You're waking me up
Everything is solid gold
You're waking me up
I never saw the bright side
Not up until today
I always sought the darkness in everything
Stubborn locks of gold
Hiding my face inside of my head
Running my mouth but not telling you how I feel
How I feel
Until now, I've kept this to myself
Been sleeping right through it all
You're waking me up
Everything feels different
You're waking me up
Everything is solid gold
You're waking me up
x 2
Everything I see melts with my eyes
Every thought I have grows with the vines.
The lyrics to Foreign Air's song "Wake Me Up" seem to convey a sense of self-discovery and personal growth. The opening lines, "You're waking me up, I hope I land on two feet," suggest that the singer is undergoing a transformative experience, perhaps with the help of a significant other or a significant event. Prior to this moment, the singer admits to being clueless and dismissing the advice of others. They have been hiding behind their stubbornness, represented by "locks of gold," and keeping their true emotions inside their head, not effectively communicating how they truly feel.
The chorus emphasizes the newfound awakening, with the repeated line "You're waking me up." It signals a shift in perspective, where everything feels different and is now seen with golden clarity. The contrast is drawn between the previous focus on darkness and negativity, and the newfound ability to see the bright side. The lyrics reflect a realization that the singer needed this transformative experience all along, and there is a sense of relief and contentment in finally figuring it out.
The closing lines of the song, "Everything I see melts with my eyes, every thought I have grows with the vines," create vivid imagery that suggests a deeper connection to one's surroundings. It implies a heightened sense of awareness and a profound unity with the world around them. Overall, the lyrics depict a personal journey of self-discovery, shedding old habits, and embracing a new, more positive perspective on life.
