When It Comes To Love
Foreigner Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I remember the day
Seems so far away
When I walked into your life
And the look in your eyes
How it took you by surprise
But it felt so right

Then I drew you in
Told you anything
'Cause I wanted you so bad
Girl I led you on
Said there's nothing wrong
In giving your heart to me

But when it comes to love
I should know better
When it comes to love
I take the blame
'Cause you are the one I should've held on to
Yeah, it coulda ben you

I never realized
How time was on my side
Lost sight of my perfect world
And the man that I've become
From the damage that I've done
It's so clear to me now

But I wished that I
Never was the kind
To steal a lonely heart
And I didn't see how good you were for me
Now it's too late to go back

'Cause when it comes to love
I should know better
When it comes to love
I take the blame
'Cause you are the one I should've held on to

When it comes to love
Girl I can't help it
When it comes to love
I always lose my way
And you are the one I should've held on to

Ah, it coulda been you
Making a change in my heart
Finding a new place to start
Wondering what I can do
Will I ever get over you no

When it comes to love
I should know better
When it comes to love
I take the blame
'Cause you are the one I should've held on to

When it comes to love
Girl I can't help it
When it comes to love
I always lose my way

And you are the one I should've held on to
Ah, it could've been you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Foreigner's song "When It Comes To Love" describe a man's remorse for letting go of a woman who he now realizes was the one he should have held on to. He remembers the day when they first met and how it felt so right. However, he admits that he led her on and never saw how good she was for him, ultimately losing her. Now, he reflects on his mistakes and wishes he could make a change in his heart, but it's too late.

The song's powerful lyrics highlight the universal human experience of regret and the painful realization of missing out on love. The chorus, "when it comes to love, I should know better," creates a sense of self-awareness and a realization of one's shortcomings. The song's slow and emotional melody adds to the nostalgic and reflective nature of the words.

Overall, "When It Comes To Love" is a poignant reminder of the importance of holding on to love and not taking it for granted. The lyrics capture the essence of a love that was once lost and the longing to somehow make it right again.

everyone please remember that mick wrote this one just like he wrote all your favorites. kelly is a great singer and an humble guy. this might become the "i've been waiting" for the 21st century. Lou will always have a place in rock history. this album "can't slow down" is awesome. just the re-birth they needed.

If I remember correctly twenty years ago original drummer Dennis Elliott said l. Want to know what love is killed them

@legendaryTMNICO

He also produced some really good rock songs for Billy Joel like We didn’t star t
He fire and I go to extremes.

@waltersimmons946

@@brandypeneueta1681 Dennis Elliott did say "I want to know what love is " killed them , it was on Vh1 "Behind the music" . It killed their Rock edge credibility , that plus Mick Jones screwing Lou Gramm out of songwriting credit/ ratios is why Gramm left in 1990 . Gramm left again in 2003 because of Mick Jones alcoholism. Foreigner has been nothing but a business since "I want to know what love is " came out . It revealed Jones' GREED'.

@daniella7834

Never heard this song before but I absolutely love it! Kelly Hansen is a fantastic singer and hope he will always be with Foreigner.

@oscarjetson128

If you ever get the chance to see this band, you will not be disappointed.

@georgeanderson7499

Thanks for making me cry with this song, Foreigner, thinking of my high school sweetheart whom I didn't marry (it's a long story) and the only time in my life I was ever really in love.

@ragenbostrom8075

Finally!! Lyric writing and song writing has returned!! (Giving the last decade of club music the side eye and thinking "what was that???")

@tomcarigan7667

Singers are singers, there all great but some are just over the top, as in Lou Gramm and Kelly Hanson, but the writers are the heart of the songs.
THANK you Mick Jones for your contribution to music with your beautiful and amazing songs!!!

@wendykeymont6685
