White Lie
Foreigner Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

One little white lie
One white lie surrounds us
One white lie won't stop the love
That I feel around us

Darlin', do you think about me
What I feel for you, don't you ever doubt me
You see the lock on the door
Of this heart, but you hold the key
I need the trust you can give
Is there something that you need from me?

One little white lie
One white lie surrounds us
One white lie won't stop the love
That I feel around us

Secrets, and the way we keep them
Between you and me
Promise we'll never need them
I can see something so true
No one else could ever see
And I'll never chance losing you
I believe my heart, I hear what it's telling me

One little white lie
One white lie surronds us
One white lie won't stop the love
That I feel around us

One little white lie
One white lie tears us apart
One white lie won't stop the love
That's waiting in this heart
That's waiting in this heart

Temptation leave us alone
'Cause I know you're always there
But white lies can weigh like stone
And in this world I hear them everywhere

One little white lie, ooh yeah
One white lie surrounds us
One white lie won't stop the love
That I feel around us

One little white lie, one lie
One white lie tears us apart
One white lie won't stop the love
That's waiting in this heart
That's waiting in this heart

One lie, one lie

One little white lie, one white lie
One white lie, one little white lie

The singer affirms the love he feels and warns of temptation, insisting that they stay away from white lies that can weigh like stone and tear them apart.

This song acts as a reminder that it is essential to build and maintain trust in relationships. Even if the lie seems small and insignificant, it can have a profound impact on the relationship as a whole. The repetition of the chorus emphasizes the point that one white lie can tear apart what they have together. The song also highlights the importance of communication and honesty. This is such a great album and this song is amazing. Lou Gramm in his heyday was one of the very best rock vocalists.

@Paul Michael Freedman Just gave it a listen - my honest assessment: As albums go "Unusual Heat" and "Mr. Moonlight" sound incredibly similar, it actually sound like the songs were all written and recorded at the same but released a few years apart, but who am I to say. It's a solid LP no doubt, but I'd give "Mr. Moonlight" a slight edge because I really think the songs "Rain", "Until the End of Time" and of course "White Lie" are exceptional tunes, better than anything on "Unusual Heat". But would wholeheartedly agree that Johnny Edwards voice is tremendous, a definite clone voice of Lou and just as powerful. Had I not known it was him I would just thought it was Lou on vocals. I've always been partial to Lou, he seems like such a down-to-earth guy and on account of his past health issues, man o man that guy is lucky to be alive

@Greg Messina Let me know what you think.

@Paul Michael Freedman I'm gonna give Unusual Heat a listen

@Greg Messina What I don't understand is why they let all that work go to waste. They could have just finished the album with Johnny and then continued with Gramm. I liked unusual heat and a second album of that calibre would have been very welcome to me.

@Paul Michael Freedman That may be true about Lou leaving the band then coming back but that really should be no negative reflection on Lou, the real villain in Foreigner is Mick Jones causing all the controversy to begin with. One of the biggest reasons Lou left the band back in the late 80s was on account of his continued differences with Mick Jones. In particular the song "I Want To Know What Love Is" off the "Agent Provocateur" album. After the song was written by both Lou and Mick, the two began discussing writing contributions/credit - Lou felt the appropriate balance should have been 35% for him and 65% for Mick. Mick countered with 5% for Lou and 95% for himself which shocked Lou to kingdom come and therein began the long love/hate relationship between them. Lou eventually gave in and surrendered 100% of the song to Mick, most likely out of spite and incredibly hurt feelings. Lou did stay with the band after the album was completed and for 1987's "Inside Information". In 1987 and 1989 he did release two decent solo albums and Mick released a solo effort as well in 1989. After that, things get complicated and difficult to figure out. But apparently they both buried the hatchet and came together for the "Mr. Moonlight" album

Surprised this album isn't better recognized. This is one of Foreigner's best songs, it was released as a single but did nothing on the charts. This LP got lost in the wake of the Grunge craze of the early - mid 90s
