Forest Sun has regaled audiences around the globe with his wealth of songs and stories, all sung and told with back porch ease and bonhomie. Sun's music has been compared to everyone from Jack Johnson and John Mayer to Van Morrison and Bob Dylan but his unique style is entirely his own.
He's opened for Bonnie Raitt, The Beach Boys, Steve Earle, Lyle Lovett, Jackson Browne, Keb Mo and Brett Dennen among others and collaborations on his many records include the likes of such musical luminaries as Jolie Holland, Sean Hayes, ALO, Hot Buttered Rum to name a few.
In 2007 he was awarded 1st place in the Pacific Song Writing Competition with Drops in the Ocean, and in 2009 his song Gurus and Rockstars from the album Harlequin Goodnight was nominated for best song in the Just Plain Folks Awards.
His music provided soundtracks for Land of Saints, A Common Thread, and 5th Symphony Document.
Forest Sun has been featured on KFOG Local Scene Vol. 1 and 3 and the Japanese compilations Surf Time vol. 1 and 2.
As well as producing his own records, (Not Afraid, Plenty, For the Story, Walk through Walls, So Nice, Harlequin Goodnight and the 2010 release of the children's record, Just for Fun) Forest Sun has produced Minneapolis song-writer Alex Goldfarb, the benefit CDs Songs for Laura Vol 1 and 2 and hosted the monthly Songbird Series at the Bazaar Cafe and Songbird Radio on KWMR.
Acoustically, he tours with Ingrid Serban singing harmonies and the full band includes David Phillips on lap steel, Steve Adams from ALO on bass and Michael Messer on drums.
It's one of those album closers that's enough to make you play the whole thing through again. 'Harlequin Goodnight' is altogether a quiet joy in a raucous world.

I don't mind, I don't mind, If I disappear
Wrap myself in twilight feel the darkness on my skin
Don't forget now midnight, won't you wake me when you get in
I will bathe in your softly scented waters
I will wait for you to come home
Want is a knife that shapes my life
Hey, hey midnight, won't you wake me when you appear
Won't you help me find, help me find my tears
There's so much to tell you, I don't know where to begin
Don't forget now midnight, won't you wake me when you get in
I will walk in your quiet garden
I will dream of people I've known
Blade in my side turns with the tide
Cuts through the flesh, cuts through the bone
Hey, hey midnight won't you wake me when it's clear
Tell me again, tell me again
There's nothing to fear
The song "Midnight" by Forest Sun is an emotional ballad that begs the arrival of the midnight hour. The singer seems to be alone and ready for the darkness to swallow them, but not before they engage in a ritual. They ask midnight to awaken them when it appears, as they don't mind disappearing into the night. The singer longs to feel the darkness on their skin and to be wrapped in twilight. There is a certain affinity between the singer and the night. The singer uses sensory imagery when they say they will "bathe in your softly scented waters" and they will "walk in your quiet garden".
Furthermore, the singer addresses midnight as if it's an entity that they long to be reunited with. They anticipate the moment when midnight will arrive, and they seem to have some unspoken connection with it. The song has different interpretations, but it could be viewed as the singer's emotional craving for a loved one. The use of the line "Want is a knife that shapes my life, cuts through the flesh, cuts through the bone" could signify a deeper pain that the singer is going through. The spectral experience of wanting someone and not having them is the theme at the heart of the song.
The chorus repeats the same plea to midnight, relaying the singer's desire to connect with something they hold dear. When the singer says they want to cry, they don't know where to begin, hinting that there's a lot of pent-up emotion in them. The last line of the chorus is the most hopeful, as the singer asks for reassurance that there's nothing to be afraid of in the darkness. In conclusion, the song is a touching message of love and hope that showcases the artist's poetic range.
