In the beginning of 1998 Johan Svensson showed interest in the band and joined on guitar/bass. This new line-up didn’t last long since we had different aims and after some months Forest of Shadows was once again a one-man band. After Johan’s departure I started to redo the recordings of the old songs and in may 1998 the same four songs were released on the first real demo, titled “The Silent Cry”. During the release of the demo I got in contact with a friend of a friend, Micce Andersson, who found my band interesting and wanted to help me out. Almost instantly we wrote the opening riff of “Eternal Autumn” and started discussing some old songs to re-record.
In the beginning of 1999 we contacted Katatonia and asked them if we could do a cover of their masterpiece “Rainroom”. They approved and we recorded the song as well as a new version of “The Silent Cry”. In may 1999, a year after the release of the first demo, we released a promo called “promotion-cd 1999” which featured these two song. The intention of the promo was to show our new direction and sound which was a success since we recieved good critics from both friends and zines. We were really satisfied with what we had accomplished and ready to take it all a step further.

Drowned by Guilt
Forest of Shadows Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
In the cold black water
Struggling,
Like so many others
But now
It was just me
All alone
All alone
My nemesis
Staring at me with no remorse
As if somehow guilty
And sentenced to death
... and there I was
In the cold black water
My pale dead body
And there I was
Drifting on the waves
Drowned
Drowned
The lyrics of Forest of Shadows's song "Drowned by Guilt" depict a haunting and desperate scene of a person submerged in cold black water, symbolizing their emotional turmoil and feelings of guilt. The repetition of the phrase "and there I was" suggests a sense of helplessness and isolation, as the singer finds themselves struggling and drowning amidst their own inner turmoil. The mention of others also drowning implies that this state of emotional distress is shared by many, reflecting a universal experience of guilt and self-doubt.
The lyrics emphasize the singer's solitude, as they confess to being all alone. They feel their weaknesses and fears manifesting as their nemesis, staring at them without any remorse, indicating a self-inflicted punishment for their perceived guilt. The line "sentenced to death" further reinforces the severity and burden of their internal struggle.
As the song progresses, the imagery shifts to depict the singer as a lifeless body floating on the waves. This visual of their pale dead body suggests a surrender to their guilt and a loss of vitality. The repetition of the word "drowned" intensifies the feeling of suffocation, both physically and mentally, as they become consumed by the weight of their guilt.
Overall, "Drowned by Guilt" portrays the overwhelming emotional journey of an individual trapped in their own guilt-ridden psyche. It highlights the profound isolation, self-condemnation, and suffocating nature of guilt, offering a poignant and introspective exploration of the human condition.
