Erlkönig
Forseti Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Es ist der Vater mit seinem Kind;

Mein Sohn, was birgst du so bang dein Gesicht?
Siehst, Vater, du den Erlkönig nicht?
Den Erlenkönig mit Kron' und Schweif?
Mein Sohn, es ist ein Nebelstreif.

Du liebes Kind, komm, geh mit mir!
Gar schöne Spiele spiel' ich mit dir;

Was Erlenkönig mir leise verspricht?
Sei ruhig, bleibe ruhig, mein Kind;
In dürren Blättern säuselt der Wind.

Willst, feiner Knabe, du mit mir geh'n?
Meine Töchter sollen dich warten schön;

Ich liebe dich, mich reizt deine schöne Gestalt;

Erreicht den Hof mit Müh' und Not;
In seinen Armen das Kind war tot.

Overall Meaning

In Forseti's song Erlkönig, we see a father and his child travelling through the night on horseback. The father is holding onto his son tightly, trying to keep him warm and safe as they travel. However, the child is visibly scared and asks the father if he can see the Erlkönig, the king of the alder trees, with his crown and tail. The father dismisses his fears, saying it's just a mist.

The Erlkönig appears to the child again, this time inviting him to come with him to play games and see colourful flowers. The child asks his father if he can hear what the Erlkönig is saying, but again, the father tells him to calm down, insisting that it's just the wind rustling through the leaves. The Erlkönig then tries to use force to take the child, telling him that he loves his beautiful form.

The father realizes too late that his child had been taken from him by the Erlkönig and he rushes back to the village with his dead son in his arms. The song is a haunting and tragic tale of loss and the dangers that lurk in the darkness. The eerie melody and slow, deliberate pacing of the song perfectly capture the mood of the story.
