Come Clean
Fort Hope Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
How did we get time to hang them all?
Remembering the nights that we spent
Picking up the glass in the end
I'll keep hold of you
If you keep hold of me
And this silence is over finally
No more wishing for the answers
If you need them you don't need them
Do you need them? We don't need them
So come clean so come clean
So many pictures on the walls
Remembering the nights we hang them
If this helps you answer then
Then we'll role it over and over again
Picking out the glass in our hands
I'll let go of you if you let go of me
And this silence is over finally
No more wishing for the answers
If you need them you don't need them
Do you need them? We don't need them
So come clean so come clean
And this silence is over finally
No more wishing for the answers
If you need them you don't need them
Do you need them? We don't need them
'Cause good people light candlesAnd burn themselves to gives
Us some bright light
That we use as our focus
We lose the wind inside
But you would have known that
You would have known that
You would have known
Yes you would have known that
You would have known that
You would have known
You would have known that
You would have known that
You would have known
You would have known that
You would have known that's what I need
So stop thinking about it
(Well it's what I need)
So stop thinking about it
If this silence is over come clean
The lyrics of Fort Hope's song "Come Clean" encapsulate a complex emotional landscape marked by nostalgia, introspection, and the desire for raw honesty in relationships. The opening lines reference the "pictures on the wall" that symbolize memories, perhaps representing moments shared between two individuals. This imagery evokes a sense of reflection on their past, questioning how they found the time to create these memories together while also acknowledging the effort involved in navigating difficult moments in their relationship, hinted at by the metaphor of "picking up the glass." The glass can signify the fragile nature of their connection, suggesting that there were moments of breakage that needed repair. The lyrics draw attention to the bittersweet nature of reminiscing; while these memories are cherished, they also come with the acknowledgment of past struggles.
As the song progresses, the repeated phrase "I'll keep hold of you if you keep hold of me" encapsulates the mutual dependency and commitment that characterizes their bond. This interplay of support emphasizes a desire for stability amidst tumultuous emotions, highlighting the idea that both parties need to engage actively in the relationship to preserve it. The mention of breaking the silence conveys a crucial turning point; it signifies a shift from avoidance of difficult truths to a more candid exchange of feelings. By rejecting the allure of "answers," the lyrics suggest that sometimes, the quest for clarity can be counterproductive. Instead of seeking definitive explanations, the singer encourages an openness to vulnerability, reinforcing the notion that authenticity must take precedence over semantic certainty in relationships.
The chorus, "So come clean," emerges as a powerful invitation for both individuals to shed the facades they may have built around their emotions. This plea resonates with the desire for transparency—to share their true selves without the weight of pretense. The repetition of this phrase throughout the song underscores its significance in the narrative, reinforcing a sense of urgency and necessity for honesty. As the singer grapples with the burden of silence, the lyrics imply that embracing vulnerability might alleviate the tensions that have accumulated over time. The emphasis on “not needing answers” challenges traditional notions of closure, positing that sometimes, emotional clarity comes from a willingness to simply be present with one another.
Towards the end, the lyrics explore a broader theme of sacrifice and selflessness, encapsulated in the imagery of "good people lighting candles." This metaphor suggests that those who genuinely care often give parts of themselves for the sake of others, shining light in dark moments. However, this act of giving can come at a personal cost, demonstrating an interplay between benevolence and the potential loss of self (represented by "burning themselves"). The idea that "we lose the wind inside" suggests that despite these efforts, there is a risk of losing one’s own identity or sense of direction. The repeated assertions, "you would have known that," indicate a longing for mutual understanding and acknowledgment of shared struggles. Ultimately, the call to "stop thinking about it" and "come clean" serves as a powerful culmination of the song's core theme, urging both individuals to break free from overthinking and embrace genuine communication in order to foster a healthier, more resilient relationship.
