To keep us up off ground
Then I don't need your explanation, no
When I don't seek your acclimation, no
So let's hope
(No, you're never gonna see what I see)
(No, you're never gonna see what I see)That you won't
(No, you're never gonna see what I see)
‘Cause when I look in your eyes
I see a violent sky but in the tears we cry
And say we'll never die
Why can't you see, the past is the past
So just let it be, yeah
(What made you do it now?)
(What made you do it now?)
‘Cause people let you down
They'll always let you down
But in your fears you'll drown
What made you do it now?
Why can't you see, the past is the past
So just let it be, yeah
We don't need your heart
To keep us up off ground, no
And I don't need your explanation, no
So let's hope
(No, you're never gonna see what I see)
(No, you're never gonna see what I see)
That you won't
(No, you're never gonna see what I see)

You've gotta make this
You've gotta make this alone
‘Cause when I look in your eyes

Fort Hope’s song “Look At Yourself” delves deeply into the complexities of relationships, self-awareness, and the struggles associated with personal growth. The repeated assertion that "we don't need a heart to keep us up off ground" serves as a poignant juxtaposition to the traditional sentiments surrounding love and emotional vulnerability. It suggests a desire for independence from traditional emotional support systems and indicates that the singer is seeking strength from within rather than reliance on external validation. This theme of self-sufficiency is evident in lines that dismiss the need for explanations or approval from another party. The singer seems to be confronting their own past and those who have let them down, reiterating the importance of moving on and finding strength in the face of disappointment.
The imagery present in the lyrics paints a vivid emotional landscape. The "violent sky" that is seen in the eyes of another symbolizes tumultuous emotions—perhaps a reflection of struggle and chaos that can exist beneath the surface of human connections. Yet amid this turbulence, there are "tears we cry," suggesting vulnerability and shared pain—an acknowledgment that while relationships can be fraught with difficulty, there is a glimmer of hope in a collective resolve to endure ("and say we'll never die"). This juxtaposition highlights the tension between despair and resilience, emphasizing that even in moments of darkness, there remains a will to persevere. The recurring line, "Why can't you see, the past is the past," seems to implore a release from old grievances, urging the recipient of the message to understand that clinging to the past can hinder progress and healing.
Throughout the song, there is a strong commentary on the nature of human relationships and the inevitable disappointments that come with them. The repeated acknowledgment that "people let you down" reinforces the idea that no one is infallible, and the fear of betrayal can often lead to an internal battle where one might feel lost or overwhelmed. The phrase "in your fears you'll drown" poignantly encapsulates how destructive unchecked fears can be, leading to emotional suffocation and preventing personal evolution. The urgent inquiry of "What made you do it now?" places the focus on the actions and motivations behind choices, possibly indicating a moment of self-reflection or a confrontation of one’s own decisions and their impact on the relationship.
The refrain to "look at yourself" becomes a rallying cry for self-examination and accountability. It challenges both the singer and the listener to introspect, encouraging the idea that understanding oneself is pivotal before one can truly understand and engage with others. The notion of making it alone suggests that while connections are important, self-reliance is equally critical for personal growth. This theme resonates throughout the song, advocating for empowerment through self-awareness and acceptance of one's past while urging the listener to forge their path forward, free from the shackles of regret. In doing so, the song encapsulates a journey of facing and embracing one's truth, ultimately suggesting that clarity often resides in the act of looking inward before reaching out.
