When i was a kid and this song came over the radio i used to just turn it off, switch the station. I could never listen to it, the pain i still felt, and still feel to this day. Im 26 now, my dad works in the oil and gas industry and for all but a year of my childhood he was gone. We lived in mansions, drove jaguars, dressed in designer clothes and lived like royalty. But my sister and i were being raised by our stepmom. The one thing i needed he could never give us. Especially after 2011 when he was the sole survivor of a massacre perpetrated by the egyptian army during the arab spring. 49 brave men died, shot and killed in a firefight between apache's private security and the army. The army was hunting for my dad. He survived alone in the desert surrounded by the rotting corpses of his coworkers for 3 weeks. When he came home after that, he wasnt with us, he was still in the western desert in his shack hiding under his desk. I just want to go out to kelowna and see him. Hes gonna work himself into an early grave and i just want him and i to spend a summer together and do all the things we never did.

She decided to send me to a dormitory, thinking it might straighten me out. Dad wasn't thrilled about it, but he got me a small phone so he could keep in touch.

I'll admit, I didn't always answer his calls. Sometimes, I was too caught up with friends or wary of getting caught with the phone by teachers. One day, Dad left for another city like always, but this time, he never returned. It was during those long, empty months of waiting that I first heard that song.

I held onto hope, waiting for his call or his return. But as the days turned into weeks and then months, my phone stayed silent. Then, one day, my mom came and picked me up from the dormitory in the middle of the semester, which was unusual. The next day, at home after our prayers, she sat me and my little brother down and delivered the news: Dad wasn't coming back. He had passed away while working in that distant city.

They said that on his last day, he still carried a picture of us in his pocket. I couldn't shake the regret of ignoring his calls. Even now, at 32, I still have his number. Sometimes, in moments of longing, I call it, knowing he'll never answer. I miss you, papa...

The most underrated musician ever. I haven't listened to this song in like a decade. My dad bought me this album for my 14th or 15th birthday, he has been gone for almost 6 years now. I dont even remember telling him about Fort Minor but he knew I loved Linkin Park so I think he somehow connected the dots and got it for me. Mike raps, he sings, plays guitar, plays piano, produces, and probably does more than I know. He's a genius. Thanks for everything Mike.

Took my daughters to see Linkin Park and they performed a chorus of this song and the memories flooded over me. I'm 62 and recently retired after 26 years in uniform and approximately 6 years of that was on deployment. I missed a lot in that time and there's no going back so now I'm making up for lost time like going to an LP concert with our twin daughters, it was fucking epic lol. I'm adjusting to civilian life and enjoying the moments with my wife and girls, yep life is good here😊🤙. This song really opened the floodgates of memories. My best friend and I were always stuck at our jobs but kept in touch. I was in the service at the time when this song came out. I remember I was on my first deployment. The service was the worst and darkest time of my life. I will never forget how hard this song hit me when I first heard it. Here we are, September 2023, and I still breakdown and cry like a little boy whenever I hear it. Add a kid my dad always worked away. We didn't get to have him around often and the older i got i realized that he chose to stay with his work instead of being with us. It's been 9 years now since i seen him last, he still chooses his work over family. He's never met his grandchildren, he has the means and money to come but chooses his lifestyle over us. The line that says "when you come back i won't be here and you can sing, where'd you go" that is the real message here.

It's a message about the consequences of putting career ahead of family NOT death. Do you nor understand the lyrics or actually have listed to what he says? When this song came out I was working in a factory during one of my high school summers. The constant noise of the machines meant we had to wear earplugs at all times. We'd have radios on at stations to help keep sane/pass the time and for some reason that piano pitch was just high enough it would sit above the machine and I could hear it from several stations away and it would make me so happy to hear it.

It’s not about losing someone in death, it’s not about showing gravitate, Come on!!! Listen to the lyrics, he’s telling his wife how it’s fked up she’s leaving him there waiting, anticipating for her coming home cause she has put her career ahead of her family and leaves them without their mother around. He clearly talks about missing family time like barbecues and Halloween cause her priorities are fked up and she no longer participated in family time with him and the kids.
