On and On
Fossil Collective Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Try to remember how the story goes
I'm by the side of the road
the moon was high the trees all black as coal.

Why did I run where did I go,
back at the side of the road I tried to walk a long long time ago

On & on - the silence seems to matter - you are the one
On & on - the silence seems to carry on - you are the one

I can't see the world from the inside looking out.
Take me outside to the moonlight where the seasons keep turning round.

On & on - the silence seems to matter - you are the one
On & on - the silence seems to carry on - you are the one

On & on - the silence seems to matter - you are the one
On & on - the silence seems to carry on - you are the one

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Fossil Collective's "On and On" evoke a sense of longing, confusion, and desperation. The singer seems to be trying to remember the details of a story or event that has left them stranded and alone by the side of the road. The imagery of the moon and the black trees emphasizes the eerie and unsettling nature of their surroundings, adding to the sense of isolation and vulnerability. The repeated refrain of "On & on - the silence seems to matter - you are the one / On & on - the silence seems to carry on - you are the one" suggests that the singer is searching for someone to connect with, someone they can trust and confide in. However, their attempts to find this person or place seem futile as they can't seem to see the world from the inside looking out.

The overall tone of the song is melancholic and introspective, with a strong emphasis on the theme of loneliness and the search for connection. The repetition of the refrain creates a sense of circularity and repetition, reflecting the feeling of being stuck in a cycle of isolation and despair. The use of nature imagery, such as the moonlight and changing seasons, adds a sense of universality to the lyrics, suggesting that the singer's experiences are relatable and resonate with listeners.

Hey fossil..loved it. About 1974 I was in the National Forest in Yellowstone, up in the Mountains in late August in a plateau of columbines in rutting season when Lo and Behold a big bull moose came down from the mountain and walked right up to me. It was beautiful...like Noah or Adam or something.
