Best Friend
Foster The People (Song.SX) Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You'll do everything you can
'Cause you're never gonna let it get em down
(When you find it all around)
Yeah, it comes in waves, but it's hardest from the start
Feeling, sleeping, in the field again,
Oh, I can feel, I can feel
Yeah, premonition smiling in the dark
Oh, I can see, I can see
I can see the story starting to arc
Oh, oh, oh, oh
It's comes up
I've been a spoken word
I've been a river bed
I've been a rabid voice
And let it flow up from within
Sometimes it feels like I only dream in black and white
Ah, ah, ah, ah
And colors so
(When your best friends are strung out)
You'll do everything you can
'Cause you're never gonna let it get em down
(When you find it all around)
Yeah, you say it's what you need
And hide your eyes when you're close to me
(When you feel up in the clouds)
Well, it comes in waves, but it's hardest from the start
Waits, and fed us, slipping into dreams
Oh, I can feel, I can feel
I can feel the celestial beings
Oh welted pleasures leaving with the breath
I can see, I can see
I can see the beauty in the mask
Oh, oh, oh, oh
It draws up
I've been a river bed
I tried to salt the wound
I've carried more than I can
I feel I've got a lot to prove
Sometimes I feel like I only dream in black and white
Oh, oh, oh, oh
But colors so
(When your best friends are strung out)
You'll do everything you can
'Cause you're never gonna let it get em down
(When you find it all around)
Yeah, you say it's what you need
You hide your eyes when you're close to me
(When you feel up in the clouds)
You ought to know
That I'm here no matter where you want to go
(In your head hanging upside-down)
Well, it comes in waves, but it's hardest from the start
I'm here, no matter where you are
So let it in with, open arms, no matter where you are
Sometimes, you'll have to wait,
And it passes by like a satellite or star
No matter where you are
(When your best friends are strung out)
You know when (Ooh-hoo-hoo)
(When you feel up in the clouds)
Oh, yeah, you know when (Ooh-hoo-hoo)
(When your best friends are strung out)
Oh, yeah, you know when
You ought to know
That I'm here no matter where you want to go
(In your head, hanging upside-down)
Yeah, you know when
That's how you know
When your best friends are strung out
The lyrics to Foster the People's "Best Friend" are a testament to the loyalty and unconditional love one has for their closest friends. The singer is speaking of a time when their best friend has hit rock bottom and succumbed to addiction. Despite the hardships they face and the pain they feel, the singer vows to never let their friend fall alone. They promise to do everything in their power to lift their friend up and stand by them throughout their struggle. The phrase "when your best friends are strung out, you'll do everything you can" is the central theme of the song.
The song is a mix of pain, hope, and love. The idea of addiction is presented as waves that come and go, and while it is difficult to face, it is hardest at the beginning. The singer reminisces about the moments they shared with their friend before things got bad and wishes to see those times again. The lyrics "sometimes it feels like I only dream in black and white, but colors so" hints at how the singer feels like they are in a dark place but still have hope for a better future.
The chorus is a powerful repetition of the sentiment that no matter where their friend is, and no matter how much they may struggle or change, their friendship will remain steadfast. The song is a message about never giving up on the people we love, no matter what.

I once was the best friend. Strung out, with nothing.
A friend opened his house to me, and my life has completely turned around. Got a job, got in shape, stopped using. Its so hard to do these things with no hope, been there for far to long. Nothing to look forward to. To not be excited about the rest of your life. Only capable of seeing the darkness and bad in the world.
There is darkness and bad everywhere in the world, but good is there to. Life is perspective, and if your perspective has since the time of your birth been 110% trying to survive, its impossible to see anything better. To see what you could be.
Don't put yourself down. You're a human being, even if you use. Don't hate yourself for using, that is not the right way to better yourself. That is focusing on the bad. Focus on the good, love yourself, self care. Take care of yourself because you are the only one who can, not even a Significant Other can (or should have to). If you can't stop using, start doing good things to yourself at least, to show yourself you care about yourself.
Perhaps that will help. It helped me, I love the part of me that loves to use, it is a part of me that made me who I am today (better then I ever was before). Maybe I'll use again, but I won't put myself down for doing so. I'll instead be there for myself to figure out why and to fix whatever problem is there because I care about myself. My whole self.
Take this all with a grain of salt. I'm lucky, unfortunately more lucky then a lot of people on the planet.
Wish you all well.
Peace
Inner Peace
World Peace

@JS-311
I'm surprised this never became a huge hit that was on the radio all the time like Don't Stop (Color on the Walls) and Pumped up Kicks. I wish this, Pseudologia Fantastica, and Truth would all get as popular....
@Evmeistah
too much truth to be popular ;)
@JS-311
Evmeistah I can see that about the latter two, but best friend is literally about writers block. It's nothing that's "pushing for a cause" like the Truth and Pseudologia Fantastica
@michellexval
Me too. Its such a catchy song.
@inferiordior
Notorious Incognito and Houdini (seriously that was a good song)
@landennation8201
Notorious Incognito that and some of the songs from torches like Houdini and I would have done anything for you
@blatanthypocrisy9701
They are so talented and creative. A lot of their music sounds like it could be from a different band. It's a shame that "pumped up kicks" is the only song they have with over 100,000,000 views. Such good music
