Coming of Age
Foster the People Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, I see ya standing there like a rabid dog
And you got those crying eyes
Makes me wanna surrender and wrap you in my arms
You know I try to live without regrets
I'm always moving forward and not looking back
But I tend to leave a trail of dead, while I'm moving ahead
So I'm stepping away
'Cause I got nothing to say

Feels like, feels like it's coming
It feels like, feels like
Like a coming of age
Feels like, feels like it's coming
It feels like, feels like a coming of age

And when my fear pulls me out to sea
And the stars are hidden by my pride and my enemies
I seem to hurt the people that I care the most
Just like an animal I protect my pride
When I'm too bruised to fight
And even when I'm wrong I tend to think I'm right

Well I'm bored of the game
And too tired to rage

Feels like, feels like it's coming
It feels like, feels like
Like a coming of age
Feels like, feels like it's coming
It feels like, feels like a coming of age

Feels like, feels like it's coming
It feels like, feels like
Like a coming of age
Feels like, feels like it's coming
It feels like, feels like a coming of age

Feels like, feels like it's coming
It feels like, feels like
Like a coming of age

Feels like, feels like it's coming
It feels like, feels like a coming of age

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Foster the People's Coming of Age revolve around the theme of growing up and maturing, and the challenges that come with it. The opening lines depict someone standing there looking like a "rabid dog" with crying eyes, illustrating a sense of vulnerability and desperation. The singer expresses a desire to help and protect them, but also admits that they tend to leave a trail of destruction behind them as they move forward. The chorus expresses the feeling that something significant is happening, like an inevitable coming of age.

The second verse delves deeper into the challenges of growing up. The singer describes a fear that pulls them out to sea, and how their pride and enemies hide the stars. They confess that they hurt the people they care about most and compare themselves to an animal protecting their pride. Finally, they admit that even when they are wrong, they tend to believe that they are right, demonstrating the stubbornness and defiance that often accompanies adolescence.

Overall, the song is a reflection on the struggles and growth that come with maturing, and the inevitability of change.

When I was 16 I was obsessed with Foster The People and I had the album Supermodel. I would put it everytime in the car with my godfather (who raised me with my mom, he was like a dad to me). He always asked me “put the third song, I like that one, is my favorite”. Coming of Age was the song. He passed away 6 days ago and listening to this song takes me back to these beautiful moments ❤️

THIS is the type of music that should be on the radio. It has meaning, it's genuine, it's groovy. It appeals to so many people and it's the type of nostalgic music that you'll listen to years from now and remember all the good times you had while listening to it. Love this band more than words can say.
