Helena Beat
Foster the People Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It puts you down before you know it
It's gone and you're dead again
I've been in places and I won't pretend
That I make it I just fall on my head
When it's strange to take a walk downstairs
Sweep you all up on a corner and pay for my bread
You know that I cannot believe my own truthTo show what a truth, it's got nothing to lose
Yeah yeah and it's okay
I tie my hands up to a chair so I don't fall that way
Yeah yeah and I'm alright
I took a sip of something poison but I'll hold on tight
You know those days when you wanted to choose
To not get out of bed and get lost in your head again
You play the game but you gotta cut
'Cause you're coming down hard your joints are off stud
I tried to say that's not the only way
I never knew if I could convince myself to change
You were pacing, I was insecure
Slip and fall I got the calls of the prison I was living in
Yeah yeah and it's okay
I tie my hands up to a chair so I don't fall that way
Yeah yeah and I'm alright
I took a sip of something poison but I'll hold on tight
Yeah yeah and it's okay
I tie my hands up to a chair so I don't fall that way
Yeah yeah and I'm alright
I took a sip of something poison, a sip of something poison
Yeah yeah and it's okay
I tie my hands up to a chair so I don't fall that way
Yeah yeah and I'm alright
I took a sip of something poison but I'll hold on tight
Yeah yeah and it's okay
I tie my hands up to a chair so I don't fall that way
Yeah yeah and I'm alright
I took a sip of something poison, a sip of something poison
The lyrics of Foster the People's "Helena Beat" hint at a sense of disillusionment with life, and the struggles that come with trying to navigate through it all. The first few lines capture a feeling of helplessness, as if you're being taken on a journey without any control over your direction. The line "It puts you down before you know it, It's gone and you're dead again" paints a vivid picture of how life can feel like a rollercoaster, dragging you along like a force of nature.
The singer goes on to describe his own experiences of feeling lost and unsure of how to make progress in life: "I've been in places and I won't pretend, That I make it, I just fall on my head". He's honest about his own limitations and how he struggles to find the motivation to make meaningful changes in his life.
In the chorus of the song, he tries to find some solace in the small things he can control, like tying his hands to a chair to prevent himself from falling. He even acknowledges that he's consumed something harmful, but he's going to hold on tight and keep going. Overall, the lyrics of "Helena Beat" are a poignant acknowledgement of how overwhelming it can be to navigate through life's ups and downs.

Sometimes life it takes you by the hair
Pulls you down
Before you know it, it's gone and you're dead again
I've been in places and I won't pretend
Yeah I'd make it out just to fall on my head
Wake up strange and take the walk downstairs
Hit the pawn up on the corner and pay for my rent
You know that I could not believe my own truth
Just show them what I choose, got nothing to lose
Yeah yeah and it's O.K.
I tie my hands up to a chair so I don't fall that way
Yeah yeah and I'm alright
I took a sip of something poison but I'll hold on tight
You know those days when you want to just choose
To not get out of bed, you're lost in your head again
You play the game but you kind of cut
'Cause you're coming down hard and your joints are all stuck
I've tried to say that it's not the only way
I never knew if I could face myself to change
You were pacing, I was insecure
Slip and fall, I'm dodging calls, hug the prison I've been living in
Yeah yeah and it's O.K.
I tie my hands up to a chair so I don't fall that way
Yeah yeah and I'm alright
I took a sip of something poison but I'll hold on tight
Yeah yeah and it's O.K.
I tie my hands up to a chair so I don't fall that way
Yeah yeah and I'm alright
I took a sip of something poison
Took a sip of something poison, poison
Yeah yeah and it's O.K.
I tie my hands up to a chair so I don't fall that way
Yeah yeah and I'm alright
I took a sip of something poison but I'll hold on tight

When I first heard it I went "Wow, this is one of the best songs I've ever heard in my life." Most songs get better the more you listen to it.

What I love about Foster The People is that they're not trying to be just another alternative band, they have their own sound and Mark is such a talented singer/songwriter. This band is way too underrated!
