Tabloid Super Junkie
Foster the People Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, capitalistic feast has been sucking the heat
You're passing up, you're injured for ability
Well, I've been waiting for a compromise but I guess it's more the same
We're separated all the things that we want for gain
You remember your name
Well, they were looking right at you, you forget the face
If the future's sipping all space and food through a straw
And the monster's finally flipped on its back
Well, the static is a worthy test to help you brush aside the rest

Is this something that you'd ever need?
Well, I'm okay
Are you scared to take what they've taken from you?
Well yeah, I'm afraid

We've sold our names

I'm sick of being accosted by the ghost in the street
Your magazine looking backward thinking junkies are just fodder for the global elite
Do you think you had a choice
When you're eating and sleeping in all the noise?
Let the moneymakers keep the politicians afloat
We're biting everything that we're told
Well, then a smile and a couple of jokes will be enough to convince the good folks

Well, is this something you ever need?
Well, I'm okay
Are you waiting for a minute to fight for what they've taken from you?
Yeah, I'm afraid

We've sold our names

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Foster the People's song Tabloid Super Junkie appear to be a critique of capitalist culture and the media that perpetuates it. The first verse references the capitalist "feast" that is "sucking the heat" and seems to suggest that individuals are sacrificing their personal well-being and integrity for the sake of success. The singer laments the lack of compromise and the pursuit of personal gain at the expense of others. The chorus continues this theme, with the question of whether this lifestyle is something anyone would ever need, answered with an ambivalent "I'm okay". The lyrics then shift focus to the media, criticizing the way it portrays junkies as mere "fodder" for the global elite. The singer wonders if anyone really had a choice in the matter, given that the constant barrage of noise from the media makes it difficult to think critically. The final verse implies that those who hold power - the "moneymakers" and "politicians" - are able to manipulate public opinion in their favor, even if it means lying to the "good folks" with just a smile and a couple of jokes. The repetition of "we've sold our names" seems to drive home the point that individuals have become commodified, stripped of their humanity in service of the machine of capitalism and the media that fuels it.

Bem, eles estavam te olhando, você esqueceu a cara

Vendemos nossos nomes

This song bring me so much nostalgia OMG, I remember when Supermodel came out in 2014, I was 12 and FTP was a huge life changer for me.

@coleswaggins

Same here, i was 17 in 2014 tho. You listen to Sacred Hearts Club?

@isaackondoh1764

FTP in general was a gamechanger in my elementary and early highschool days. Really got me through tough times. Also sacred hearts club slaps

@FernandoLopez-mp5nd

Same, I was 19 years old when this came out, that was a very supportive album for me beacuse I was turning from a teen to an adult and that was a little complicated. Were very good times in 2014, going out with friends to walking outside at night, going to bars and parties in houses, not so much and 6 - 7 people parties but so much fun, fleeting romances, conversations at 3 AM with this song in the background... and precisely this song is my favorite from the album without being on it, probably my favorite from Foster the People. Now listening to Supermodel brings me a lot of nostalgia, I'm already 26, which isn't many years, but life has already changed. I hope my english was good jaja saludos desde Guadalajara, México.
