Sink to the Bottom
Fountains of Wayne Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I want to sink to the bottom with you
I want to sink to the bottom with you
The ocean is big and blue
I just want to sink to the bottom with you

Cars on the highway, planes in the air
Everyone else is going somewhere
But I'm going nowhere, getting there soon
I might as well just sink down with you

I want to sink to the bottom with you
I want to sink to the bottom with you
The ocean is big and blue
I just want to sink to the bottom with you
I just want to

Out on the highway, up in the air
Everyone else is going somewhere
They're going nowhere, and I'll be there soon
I might as well go under with you

I want to sink to the bottom with you
I want to sink to the bottom with you
The ocean is big and blue
I just want to sink to the bottom with you
I just want to sink to the bottom with you
I want to sink to the bottom with you
The ocean is big and blue
I just want to sink to the bottom with you
I just want to
I just want to

I just want to
I just want to

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Fountains of Wayne's "Sink to the Bottom" depict a desire for companionship and simplicity in life. The singer expresses a desire to escape the constant hustle and bustle of the world around them by sinking to the bottom of the ocean with someone they care about. The first stanza repeats the initial desire to sink to the bottom with the person, and notes the vastness of the ocean.

The second stanza highlights a contrast to the singer's own life, observing that cars and planes are heading to various destinations, while the singer feels as though they are going nowhere. Rather than continuing to feel out of place within a society obsessed with constant mobility, the singer would rather accept their place by sinking to the bottom with their chosen companion. The final stanza repeats the first, but with a slight alteration in the second line to highlight the universality of the singer's situation.

This song can be interpreted as a form of escapism, coupled with an underlying sense of resignation. It reflects a desire to leave behind the complexities and pressures of the world, while simultaneously acknowledging that such a life may not be possible. However, the singer expresses a willingness to embrace the idea of being content where they are, rather than constantly striving for something more.

Almost every song off this record. This, radiation vibe, sick day, barbara h, joe rey. I saw then open at one of the first concerts I went to. Literally broke into cheers when the played this at the end of Mrs Maisel.

The fact that they used this in Mrs. Maisel was unexpected, but actually really fitting with the ending scene ❤️

I used to listen to these guys on the school bus to and from high school everyday. Don't listen to them much these days, but they're probably in my top 10 all time favorite artists. Sucks Adam passed, the music he and Chris created brought me such joy in my teenage years.

RIP Adam, you'll be missed.

Holy shit. I have the exact same specific memory as well. They played the fuck out of this song on 91X in SD county.
