For What It's Worth
Four Shadow Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's something happening here.
What it is ain't exactly clear.
There's a man with a gun over there
And he's telling me that I got to beware.

I think it's time we stop.
Hey, what's that sound?
Everybody look what's going down.

There's battle lines bein' drawn.
Nobody's right if everyone's wrong, no
Young people speaking their minds
And getting so much resistance from behind.

I think it's time we stop.
Hey, what's that sound?
Everybody look what's going down.

What a field day for the heat.
And there's a thousand people in the streets
Singing songs and they're carrying signs
Mostly saying hooray for our side.

It's time we stop.
Hey, what's that sound?
Everybody look what's going down.

Paranoia strikes deep (into...)
Into your life it will creep (starts when...)
It starts when you're always afraid (step out...)
Step out of line, the men come and take you away.

You better stop.
Hey, what's that sound?
Everybody look what's going down
(Stop hey, tell me)
You better stop.
Hey, what's that sound?
Everybody look what's going
(etc)

(original song by Buffalo Springfield)

Overall Meaning

The song "For What It's Worth" by Buffalo Springfield was written in 1966, during the height of the Vietnam War and the civil rights movement. The opening lines, "There's something happening here. What it is ain't exactly clear," suggest that there is a sense of unease and confusion in society. The next line, "There's a man with a gun over there, And he's telling me that I got to beware," refers to the tension between protesters and police, and the fear that violence could erupt at any moment.

The chorus, "I think it's time we stop. Hey, what's that sound? Everybody look what's going down," implies that something needs to change, and people need to pay attention to what is happening around them. The next verse, "There's battle lines bein' drawn. Nobody's right if everyone's wrong, no, Young people speaking their minds, And getting so much resistance from behind," suggests that people are taking sides, and there is a growing divide between generations and ideologies. The line "nobody's right if everyone's wrong" is a powerful reminder that the truth exists beyond individual opinions.

Lyrics 🎶🎶🎶
In my defense, all my intentions were good
And heaven owns a place somewhere for the misunderstood
You know I'd give you blood if it'd be enough
Devil's on my doorstep since the day I was born
It's hard to find a sunset in the eye of a storm
But I'm a dreamer by design and I know in time, we'll put this behind
For what it's worth, I'm sorry for the hurt
I'll be the first to say, "I made my own mistakes"
For what it's worth, I know it's just a word and words betray
But sometimes we lose our way
For what it's worth
Behind the lens is a poison picture you paint
And let's not pretend you were ever searching for saints
'Cause I've been crucified for just being alive
Somewhere in the crossfire of this whispering war
Seems that I forgot just what I was fighting for
But underneath my skin there's a fire within
Still burning
For what it's worth, I'm sorry for the hurt
I'll be the first to say, "I made my own mistakes"
For what it's worth, I know it's just a word and words betray
Sometimes we lose our way
For what it's worth
The first bird to fly gets all the arrows
Let's leave the past behind with all our sorrows
I'll build a bridge between us and I'll swallow my pride
For what it's worth, I'm sorry for the hurt
I'll be the first to say, "I made my own mistakes"
For what it's worth, I know it's just a word and words betray
But sometimes we lose our way
For what it's worth
