Their music initially featured many influences from 60s psychedelia, played with a rough lo-fi abandon. They self-released several EPs and albums between 2007 and 2011, including "30 track space opera" Jurassic Exxplosion Philippic, most of which are by now scarcely available. In 2011, they met producer/songwriter Richard Swift after handing him one of their EPs, and Swift would go on to work with them for some subsequent albums. After being signed to Jagjaguwar Records, Take the Kids Off Broadway, was released as their debut album on July 24, 2012. On January 22, 2013, they released their second album, We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic. This album was produced by Richard Swift and recorded at his National Freedom studios.
For each album Foxygen 'chooses' a different era in music history to focus themselves on. We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic is based on the sixties, ...And Star Power was seventies and their newest release Hang is based on the forties.

In the darkness
Foxygen Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
There's an eye looking land in the darkness.
Or maybe in my mind it's a high word of time in the darkness.
And maybe it says
There's an alien race
I wouldn't be surprised,
We'd like to introduce you to, the darkness.
I'm streaming in, I'm streaming out
Standing in the country's eye
Will by multiply
Is always standing outside looking in this
Looking in
Say it may take a while
Putting all diamonds in my smile
And maybe I won't even go to work that day
I don't care if I'm in trouble at all
I'll just sip and this with my lingoes in of the darkness.
Oh ohh
The lyrics of "In The Darkness" by Foxygen are quite surrealistic and open to interpretation. The song describes a state of mind, where the darkness symbolizes the unknown, the hidden, and the mysterious. The lyrics suggest that sometimes we cannot see beyond the darkness, but there is something lurking in there, waiting to be discovered. It could be a man lying down, an eye observing something, or a high word of time that is yet to come.
The reference to the alien race implies that there might be more than what meets the eye, just beyond the darkness. The lyrics suggest that one should embrace the darkness and all its possibilities, instead of fearing it. The line "standing in the country's eye" suggests a sense of being judged, watched or examined, but the persona in the song is not bothered by it. He is more interested in putting "all the diamonds" in his smile, enjoying life and his own little world.

So maybe later, man
There's an elegant land
In the darkness
And maybe in the mind
It's a hell of a time
In the darkness
And maybe in space
There's an alien race
I wouldn't be surprised
So without further ado
We'd like to introduce you to
The darkness
Standing in the countryside
With soda pop and Montebay
He's always standing outside, looking in
They smile but they don't look at him
They say that it may take a while
To put more diamonds in my smile
And maybe I won't even go to work that day
I don't care if I'm in trouble at all
I'll just sit on this hill
With my fingers in the still
Of the darkness
