Their music initially featured many influences from 60s psychedelia, played with a rough lo-fi abandon. They self-released several EPs and albums between 2007 and 2011, including "30 track space opera" Jurassic Exxplosion Philippic, most of which are by now scarcely available. In 2011, they met producer/songwriter Richard Swift after handing him one of their EPs, and Swift would go on to work with them for some subsequent albums. After being signed to Jagjaguwar Records, Take the Kids Off Broadway, was released as their debut album on July 24, 2012. On January 22, 2013, they released their second album, We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic. This album was produced by Richard Swift and recorded at his National Freedom studios.
For each album Foxygen 'chooses' a different era in music history to focus themselves on. We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic is based on the sixties, ...And Star Power was seventies and their newest release Hang is based on the forties.

Foxygen Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Everyone says, everyone knows
That she'll free me
But I want something else
Don't write me of
Don't write me off
I know someone very much like me
And everyone gets gifts
But I love someone else
Don't write me off
Don't write me off
Don't write me off
Don't write me off
The lyrics to Foxygen's song Flowers are a reflection of what it's like to yearn for something else while already having something good in your life. The singer talks about a person who is very close to them and who everybody thinks will set them free. However, the singer seems to want more than just freedom. They want something else, and the lyrics suggest that they might be in love with someone else.
In the second verse, the singer talks about how they know someone who is just like them, but that person seems to be content with the gifts they receive and the freedom they enjoy. The singer contrasts this with how they feel, which is that they love someone else. The repetition of "Don't write me off" at the end of each verse could be interpreted as a plea from the singer not to be judged or discarded for not conforming to what others expect from them.
The overall message of the song seems to be that it's okay to want something else, even if what you have is pretty good. The singer is not willing to settle for what everyone else thinks they should want and is willing to pursue their own desires, even if it goes against convention.
