Into the Fire
Foy Vance Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I wanna be like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego
And walk right into the fire
If only I could know the truth in love
Then I would be so bold
Melt my idol of gold

I wanna be like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego
And see the fourth man in the fire
And if he is everything that I hope
Then I would be so bold
Melt my idol of gold

I wanna be like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego
And walk right out of the fire
With no burn upon my skin
Or on my clothes
Then I would be so bold
Melt my idol of gold

I would be so bold
Melt my idol of gold

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Foy Vance's song "Into the Fire" refer to the biblical story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. These three men were thrown into a fiery furnace by King Nebuchadnezzar because they refused to worship a golden idol he had set up. However, they emerged unscathed from the flames because God protected them. Vance expresses a desire to be like these three men and have unwavering faith in God, even in the face of danger and persecution. He wants to walk into the fire and see the fourth man (believed to be an angel or a manifestation of God) who protected Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. If he sees this fourth man, he will be emboldened to melt his own "idol of gold," which could represent anything that is taking the place of God in his life.

The lyrics convey a strong message of faith and trust in God. Vance longs to have the same courage and devotion as Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who were willing to risk their lives rather than compromise their beliefs. He wants to be so deep in love with the truth that he is willing to face the flames of persecution for the sake of what he believes in. The chorus of the song repeats three times, with each repetition adding a new layer of desire: to walk into the fire, to see the fourth man, and to walk out unscathed. The final repetition of "melt my idol of gold" solidifies Vance's commitment to living a life that's pleasing to God and focused on what is truly important.

Thank you for this song. I struggle with knowing where God was during trauma in my childhood. When I hear your Words, I can actually see Jesus with me in the fire. You will never know how much this has helped me.

Wow. I found this song on Spotify over this past weekend. I'd never heard it. I was totally floored by it, even though I couldn't quite catch the lyrics. It just set a mood for me. Like I pictured just slowly driving in a car with a loved one, unspeaking, down a wooded county lane, as the sunshine cast bars of shade of the trees across your vision. Just ...a moment. You know?
Then today, I pull this version up and read the lyrics someone had included.
I'm speechless. This song is beautiful and powerful.
Just amazing. Amazing.

Marvellous opening he did for Bonnie Raitt in Liverpool last week. Sound problems came up and he dealt with them by coming to the very front of the stage and singing without microphone or amp while they sorted it out. Top marks for a decision that had every person in The Empire cheering.
