The lyrics of “Judas” tell the story of a man’s descent to a monster due to his actions, including prominently betraying and manipulating those who trusted him very deeply, comparing himself to the disciple Judas Iscariot who similarly betrayed Jesus in the gospels. Due to his actions, he ends up destroying his life and pushing everyone else away. Despite his actions, he’s still aware of the road he’s taken and, though still putting on a tough attitude on the outside, deeply regrets everything that’s happened and everything he’s done.
Due to both the subject matter of the lyrics as well as the coincidental timing of this single’s release (mere months after a feud Jericho was in during his stint in WWE came to an end), many fans like to joke that this song is written in the perspective of former-tag-team-partner-turned-kayfabe-rival Kevin Owens, who had betrayed Jericho earlier in the year.
Following his release from WWE, Jericho began using Judas as his entrance theme, giving the song a double meaning. In addition to the original perspective, the song now serves as an anthem of a bitter veteran in the twilight of his career with everything to lose.
