Uuuu, Dude, there are MILLIONS of people worldwide dedicating their life to classical music. But how many art lovers know the work of Winsor McCay? How many photography lovers have never seen the daguerreotypes of Girault de Prangey? How many people that watch seven movies a week have never even heard of C. H. Dreyer? Etc, etc.

The list of under appreciated gems is endless but classical music in general sits at the very bottom of the list.

I think it’s clear that Baroque, Classical and Romantic music do not generally sell well, with a few notable exceptions, when compared to modern popular music which sells shite-loads! All fo you make good pints however.

Chopin originally entitled this nocturne "At the cemetery" when he composed it a day after he attended a performance of Hamlet, but erased the inscription when the piece was to be printed, saying: "Let them work it out for themselves."

Classical music is as popular as ever, but its fans have always been a minority - like, say, people who appreciate Shakespeare or Greek philosophy. Those things have quality that lasts as long as there are people who can appreciate it, and musical language is universal. Shakespeare has become hard to understand, but composers of the same period like Palestrina can be appreciated by anyone who is musical. It doesn't grab you by the balls like rock, but there's lots of stuff that's beautiful and farily easy to understand, like this nocturne. Tell your friends about it.

Shakespeare wasn't for an enlighted minority, it was popular drama, and although he was appreciated by the queen and the court, his plays were mainly a popular event, which the "mob" would attend to. Funny to know, since he is considered as one of the most complex and profound english-speaking writers, and rightly so. I guess that people didn't consider it the same way at the time, maybe precisely because it wasn't so praised and sanctified as today. Considering classical music and literature as "classical" and thus reserved to a social elite is what alienates it to the "low" people. Sad.

+WilliamOccamensis There are so many ways in which this piece and those like it are absolutely wonderful. This Nocturne, has stood the test of time, as have all 18 of his Nocturnes published in his lifetime. It is actually romantic music rather than classical music, a small point perhaps, but very significant in its emotional intimacy, exotic melodies and unexpected harmonic modulations. This piece of music in it's time was revolutionary and cutting edge and would have sounded quite odd to most people in 1845, as it will sound odd to people today who don't understand its language. Music in some senses is not a universal language so much as a universal foreign language revealing itself slowly and by degrees to the listener or player. It takes listening to or playing over and over. This piece is easy enough to be played recognizably by anybody with moderate talent after a couple of years, but if you keep playing it year after year it reveals more and more of itself. It renews and enriches its connection even after 20 or 30 years. The language is complex but ultimately much more rewarding--emotionally, spiritually and intellectually. Chopin was a genius at a level which most people are unable to comprehend.

‘It’s fairly easy to understand, like this nocturne’ I would argue otherwise. Chopin is a master at making intricate, captivating melodies and meanings out of the ‘simplest’ of things. But I do agree that classical music should be accepted by all, it is the most underrated musical genre.

This nocturne is featured in movie 'The Deer Hunter' in the scene just before Mike, Nick and Stephen go to Vietnam. There is great anxiety in this music, an omen of something that cannot be understood, but inevitably must happen.

Well, that's the difference between some piano player, some like to play soft and express emotions like that whereas other like to express emotions with power and vigor. With quiet hands, the peak of emotions comes in the sudden burst of volume in speed, but with louder hands, the deep and most somber moments are those when the pianist holds back his energy and plays softly and delicately. Both forms of performance take patience and discipline.

It's nice to have the sheet music strolling along. Only, if you want to follow the music while playing yourself (on a piano or simply pretending on the table) it would be better if the next sheet appeared 1 bar sooner than its played, so you can anticipate.... Thanks anyway!

+TacTundra At that point in the Nocturne there is a dramatic change in feeling. Chopin indicated as much in the score by writing "religioso" where the music changes. The melody changes quality from begin made of notes with different rhythmic values to a much simpler palette of quarter notes and half notes, and the bass line is all quarter notes--a big contrast to what comes before. At that point it is like a religious hymn. Two things might remind you of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen." The melody of the Christmas Carole, similar to the Nocturne, is all (almost) quarter notes ending with dotted half notes. And the Nocturne has a combination of major and minor sections and chords. "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" is one of the few Christmas carols which a combination of major and minor chords and sections. Almost all other Christmas carols are exclusively made up of major chords. There is a subtle similarity.

I can see where you're coming from. But this piece strongly holds it's own unique identity, i don't consider it sounding like eric satie's style at all. Regardless of the fact both their music are from two different eras.

@Hopeson Makokha It does have traits, that reminds of Satie - even though it has it own definte and somewhat unusual - identity. There is a hint of "nordic" folksong as well. The religioso part has the purity of classic 1600s harmony.

Rubinstein is playing it at about half the intended tempo Chopin marked. The performance practice of the 60s was very self indulgent and sentimental, so you commonly get mistakes like this.
