This one of the most beautiful pieces ever composed to my ears. The right hand plays a singing melody filled with musical delight, almost like it is speaking to itself. While the left hand floats in the backround creating a soft moving echo of comfort

I still barely have a clue who john cage is except for that my great grandmother played with him in a concert one time. She is 96 ish and still plays to this day. She has alzheimers but still remembers it.

I'm here from a book "A Gesture Life" by Chang-Rae Lee. Page 29.

"She began playing Opus 32,1, a piece she was preparing for an upcoming recital and one I especially liked. The composition calmed me. Aside from the lyrical, impassioned musings, there are unlikely pauses in the piece, near silences that make it seem as if the performer has suddenly decided to cease, to not go on, even has disappeared. These silences are really quite magical and haunting, and just at the moment it seems the pianist has stopped, the lovely notes resume."

Chopin at his best, the first composer that moved me truly, in my youth it was the 1812, and Dance of the hours which i listened to on my grandads old stereo record player in the 1960s then Swan Lake, then Beethovens sonatas, then when things got difficult I heard Tamas Vasary playing the Nocturnes and they moved me and still thirty years later move me to wonder and do things to my soul, (not very poetic I know but nevertheless true). he is the best for me. Romantic and uplifting and makes you realise how much passion there is inside you still.

Absolutely beautiful in every sense, love the part where there is silence, then a G note is played to surprise you, happens 3 times in the piece....my favourite nocturnes from Chopin are this one, F minor and F# major, don't know the exact op numbers etc. but I know what they sound like....

As always, Rubinstein is subtle and restrained. I think Chopin would approve. Interestingly, some of the notes are different from my edition, e.g. the major chord at the end.

All versions I've ever seen, including one printed in 1837, have a MARKED D natural. This is the first I've seen or heard with a D sharp. The key of the coda is indeed B minor, although the key SIGNATURE stays in B major. I guess it doesn't really matter, because the picardy third works in this situation. I've been looking for the manuscript but have yet to find it.

Idk i'm not sure about the accent on the D# in the second measure after the C part 00:50 s, it does sound like the theme is beginning again with some variations but still, in the sheet music it shows that the D# is the last note of that phrase.

Yes, the key is b major, but Chopin clearly modulates to b minor in the end. The urtext of the nocturne has a d natural in the final chord, making it minor. The ending is supposed to be ironic. I would suggest the essay "Ironic Narrative, Ironic Reading" by Michael Kline for a better explanation of why Chopin does this.

@@MrAmerica51 I've never actually seen a manuscript for this work (still looking!) but every version I have including a version printed in the mid-1800s has a clearly marked D natural in the final measure. This is the only printed version I've seen with a D sharp, clearly adapting to Rubinstein's and other performers performances. Many of Chopin's students also ending in the picardy third, adding a D sharp. Both endings make sense, but I'm fairly certain the original manuscript has a D natural.
