Soft summer eventide,
Sweet zephyrs passing by;
Lone longing, window-side.

Past pleasures' memory:
Joy, blissful victory,
Blithe, restful reverie -
Lost now to history.

Soft summer eventide,
Sweet zephyrs passing by;
Lone longing, window-side.

As Scriabin told a student when teaching this piece:

"It is evening. Someone is alone in a room. There is a longing for something. The window is open. The soft summer night is fragrant. The E-major section needs a different touch, different pedaling. Everything must change here. Then, once again, the longing for the unknown as before."

Yes, I do seem to vaguely recall him telling me something like that.

@Young Paderewski I agree. My teacher says it is something like an arguement between a man and woman, with the right hand being the woman, and the left hand the man. I think the little chords the right hand plays is like background music they put on. That is how I imagine the piece to show.

@TaedTundra I can agree with that, but it's not the saddest and most melancholic Chopin's piece, There are tons of Chopin's dark melancholic pieces, Marcha funebre from Chopin's second sonata, Nocturne Op.27 No.1, Waltz Op.34 No.2, Prelude Op.28 No.4, Ballade Op.23 No.1 in G minor, Ballade Op. 52 No.4 in F minor, also lot of preludes and mazurkas are really dark, melancholic and depressive... 🙂

The phrasing and inflection of his melodies are stunningly resemblant of the human voice...absolutely beautiful...

@classicalinspiremusic

I couldn't agree more! Chopin was a master of expressing emotion through his music, and this piece is a perfect example. The way he weaves the melody is so natural and expressive, it's truly a work of art.

@classicalinspiremusic

This piece is truly a masterpiece of Chopin's repertoire. The way he blends technical difficulty with emotional depth is truly remarkable. It's no wonder it's one of his most beloved etudes 😸
