Wow. Just wow. I think that must be the most amazing finale movement Beethoven ever wrote for piano

Sen Der

@Hal I've heard it many times. Also incredible music :)

Hal

@Sen Der go listen the Tchaikovsky's N1 concert first and third mv, will blow your mind

Tim O'donnell

@Daniel Thomases The journey Beethoven takes you throughout the Sonata is all encompassing. From memory as I haven't played it for years was dedicated to Archduke Rudolph, who was Beethoven's financial sponsor and his only student in piano as far as I know. The Sonata represents the Archduke's departure from Vienna as the French Army were approaching Vienna under Napoleon I believe, so the work is Beethoven's musical interpretation of his departure, absence, return. Interestingly the Hammerklavier Sonata is also dedicated to him

Daniel Thomases

@Tim O'donnell I have no comment about the difficulty of the piece, but Glenn Gould is known to have considered this the greatest of Beethoven's sonatas. Unfortunately he never recorded it.

@emilgilels I've played both and I'd have to agree with you as a lay person but it really interested me that this was Liszt's opinion. The 1st movt and most obviously the fugue of the Hammerklavier are just ridiculously difficult both technically and musically for certain

He's my favorite but plays the 1st movement too fast to get his great transcendent grasp of everything that I want to hear. This a fabulous Sonata.

Daniel Thomases

@Christian Vennemann Not true, he often plays at a speed superiore to that indicated by the composer.

@ChrisJo Kuhn That's just something I've heard from other people in YouTube comments.

@Christian Vennemann Maybe. I know Pollini for playing everything very fast. I really dont think, that Beethoven had this tempo in mind. Maybe you can look up and share your information?
