I can’t imagine how he thought to compose this intricate, ghostly, and anxiously beautiful miniature-movement. A wondrous way to end this great sonata!

This makes me feel... Anxious.. Stressed.. But I can't stop listening to it... It's like even though he accepts death in the 3rd movement, he adds this as a way to say that he still fears it..

It's almost like he's frantically crawling out of his own grave, only to be sucked back in by the hand of Death..

I think this piece encapsulates the deep anxiety and fear of death.. It looms almost unknown as the shortest movement, but once heard, it plagues the mind

Well said.

@XenophonSoulis

For me, this is the sound after death, when there's no life left.

@Itemtotem

The whole piece if a genius exploration of life itself. He cleverly predicts all the themes and motifs in the first movement.
The funeral march is of course death and the torrent of the 4th movement I'd say is either the soul leaving the body and going to heaven or hell, or otherwise being in a dream state

@Itemtotem

He wrote this during a tumultuous 'holiday' with his lover, (female) author George Sand (nom de plume), at her chateau on an island in Majorca. Sand didn't become attached easily and she slept around with the whole bourgeois elite gamut, from Liszt to Hugo and everyone in between.
Chopin, the bipolar invalid, the overly-sensitive bleeding-heart original Emo was of course in love with her. Made distraught by their affair and destroyed by her callous handling of his heartstrings, Frederic composed this sovereign sonata of breathtaking beauty and cryptic curios.
The whole first movement at least is a discourse between them, a running dialogue, if you will. You can hear them echoing each other, you can hear them breaking up and reuniting...
There's a certain amount of 'broken record syndrome' about this piece: because we say, hear, and do things
over and over and over again

@hartmannf4169

I agree. These 5 last bars speak for themselves. This movement is the last battle between the soul and the death

@chaospixie7863

1:15 That feeling when you finally finish a difficult task

@insulini

Once I asked a pianist what the hell about this chaotic movement. He answered me:
You had your funeral in the third movement. Here you're buried, and this is the wind over the grave.

@alainspiteri502

J agree movt one the revolt against the death - movement 2 the hope mvt 3 the funerals 4 the wind on the grave the soul goes out . Very great Sonata
