0:27 For anyone who don’t know about this case, this is a real case said by Jeremy.
When they are still on Top Gear, Jeremy and Richard and TG crew goes to French and filming Porsche and Aston: The Perfect Road Trip, when they are speeding just a bit on the French highway, the French police pulled them over asking them do they had passports, they don’t have passports on them, so the police decided to fined them, ask Jeremy and Richard gives every money on them, and took their driving license and cars (Aston Martin and a Porsche) away so they can’t drive in French anymore. Later the TG crew came and saved them drive them back.
This is why Jeremy dislike driving, speeding in French highway, and hate French police.

The French motorway police stopped me once and asked how much money I have on me and then tried to find a way to fine for me that exact amount, luckily I didn’t end up in prison though with “Pierre Le Burgluur” 😂

refuse to pay any fines in any country I don't live in. They tried sending me the fines through the post after and I wiped my arse with it. We get enough speeding fines/cameras in the UK, without having to deal with them when we go abroad.

@J Bee They don't have to let you go. Depending on how serious the offence, not being able to pay the court deposit on the spot can get you jailed until trial :/

I never carry cash when driving on Euro roads, they get very angry when I don't speak anything but English and refuse to pay them, but eventually they have to let you go. FYI I always use a hire car, so it's always returned to the company haha!

@florimond You can appeal and that will take MONTHS in court... While you are without your driving license. Yeaaah, that's greeeaaat... And if you'd actually won all you would get is that you won't be fined... And perhaps legal fees back that you'd pay. While the police officer would not care at all about your case and won't get any consequences for his actions...

@florimond It still is really sleazy that 3 guys on the side of the road have the authority to take away your license on the spot. They are not judges, they do not have a law degree, they do not necessarily know or care what the circumstances are, they're just trying to make a quick buck for the government and or themselves. And then that opens up the possibility of criminals who just want to rob you on the spot and make it look official by dressing up as police.

@Tracert 5840 they don't get to make the decision, they're forced to apply it and the police usually patrols with multiple vehicles with 3 occupants each on the highway in France so it would never be a one man decision

If you are in Europe and North America, always ask the police to show you their fines chart, which has the amounts listed for most offences.

Then tell him to give you a ticket, which you will pay at the bank.

They have no business asking you about money, let alone, handling cash.

Clarkson and Hammond were speeding in the "car seized, licence revoked, 1500€ fine" category. They got lucky their cars were not impounded. Since foreigners tend not to show to their trial, the police makes them pay on the spot and the amount is deducted from the definitive amount set by the judge.

Yeah, this isn’t France. At 1:40, you can see the Spanish kilometre marker showing 151 km on the AP-2/E-90 (Autopista de nordeste between Zaragoza and El Vendrell), so the police forces that they may encounter here are the Catalan Mossos s’Esquadra or the Policía Nacional.

I know how much the French used to hate the British tearing down their motorways, hell, I’ve done it myself.

Truth is though, in the dry the speed limit is about 81mph, you can sit at an indicated 85, make relaxed progress, and cover distances that are hard to in the UK due to traffic. Away from the cities, of course. The autoroutes are often so much smoother than British motorways, too. You don’t half notice it going from north France onto the M20 after the tunnel. The newish harsh speed limits on rural roads are a bit of a drag, but apart from that I like driving in France.

Really like this episode but when they cross the Pyrenees they should have used AP-7 La Jonquera A9 Perpignan crossing because they have route had heavy fog conditions. If one looks at James's car it has a 55 September 28 2005-February 28 2006 plate on his 2017-2018 Swindon Wiltshire assembled Honda Civic Type R instead of the proper 17 plate
