Both natives of South Bend, Indiana, we've been sharing our love of genuinely independent music from the day we began working together. Our Chicago apartment's third bedroom has become our in-house studio, where we continue to pursue this shared passion for writing, performing, and producing good music.
While our immediate partnership is our singing duo, Frances Luke Accord means more to us than just our band. We believe in a multifaceted, DIY approach to creative entrepreneurship, a tune that we feel resonates with a growing community of music-minded friends.
Our current discography includes Kandote (December 2012) and Queen for Me (April 2014).
Call You Mine
Frances Luke Accord Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
A kindling throne
Fill my cup by spilling your own
Build me up and
Put me down
Brim it with jewels
And shatter my crown
What is mine?
What's our line?
Will we draw
Out before
We unwind?
If you had wings to where might you fly?
I would climb all the way up through the sky
Now I am grounded, down by your side
Though it's only half true, may I call you mine?
Any stick I would throw on the fire
If it makes me the man you'd admire
And when the time comes that one's gotta go
Maybe now won't feel so on our own
Until I come back around like a ring
You will know by the song we shall sing
You will know by the song
Frances Luke Accord's song Call You Mine captures, with poignancy, the essence of a tumultuous relationship. The lyrics in the verse reveal contrasting emotions of the singer. The initial two lines "Lift me up on a kindling throne, Fill my cup by spilling your own" can be interpreted in two ways. It seems as though the singer is seeking attention and validation from the person they're singing to, or perhaps they want to be at the same level as that person. However, the line "Build me up and put me down" suggests that their partner is fickle and emotionally manipulative. The next line, "Brim it with jewels and shatter my crown", signifies the partner's dominance over the singer, where they can build the singer up and let them bask in their glory only to knock them down later.
The chorus has a sweet, nostalgic tone to it. The lines "If you had wings to where might you fly? I would climb all the way up through the sky" create an atmosphere of idealism and optimism that seems impossible in the context of their rocky relationship. However, the next lines, "Now I am grounded, down by your side, though it's only half true, may I call you mine?" immediately brings the singer back to reality, where they are grounded and tied down by their circumstances. Despite the bittersweet nature of the chorus, there's a sense of hope, and it adds to the song's charm.
The bridge has a beautiful metaphor where the singer is willing to do anything to make their partner happy. The line "Any stick I would throw on the fire, If it makes me the man you'd admire", shows devotion and selfless love. The last two lines in the bridge, "You will know by the song we shall sing, You will know by the song," shows that music keeps them together, and their love transcends everything.
