E a farci fare l'amore, l'amore dalle infermiere
Generale queste cinque stelle
The song "Generale" by Francesco De Gregori is a powerful and evocative reflection on war and its devastating effects on individuals and families. The opening lines of the song set the scene: "Generale dietro la collina / Ci sta la notte cruccia e assassina" ("General behind the hill / There is the harsh and murderous night"). The image of the general lurking behind the hill is a metaphor for the unseen forces that determine the course of war and the fate of those who fight in it.
The song goes on to describe the experiences of a peasant woman, who is bent over on the horizon like a child, and has had five children who were born like rabbits and have left like soldiers, but have not yet returned. The lyrics convey a sense of loss and sorrow, as the woman waits in vain for her family members to come home. The second verse shifts the focus to the soldiers themselves, who are on their way to war on a train that doesn't even stop for them to relieve themselves. The lyrics suggest that the soldiers are naive and idealistic, believing that war is beautiful, and that they will return soon to sing and make love with the nurses. However, the reality is much harsher, and there is no going back to the way things were before.
The final verse marks a return to the present, with the war over and the enemy defeated. However, the landscape is now empty and silent, and the only signs of life are the pine needles and mushrooms that can be harvested for Christmas. The song concludes with a reflection on the profound sense of dislocation and loss that war generates: "Generale queste cinque stelle / Queste cinque lacrime sulla mia pelle / Che senso hanno dentro al rumore di questo treno / Che è mezzo vuoto e mezzo pieno / E va veloce verso il ritorno / Tra due minuti è quasi giorno, è quasi casa, è quasi amore" ("General these five stars / These five tears on my skin / What sense do they have in the noise of this train / That is half empty and half full / And goes fast towards the return / In two minutes it's almost day, it's almost home, it's almost love").
