centinaia di sigarette davanti all'altare.
The lyrics of Francesco De Gregori's song I Matti describe a group of madmen who walk around content, searching for crickets and snakes between fields and railways. It seems as though they have escaped society and don't have any connection to a city or an established community. They have nothing left, and even though they scream, no one hears them. They are on the brink of what is considered normal and exist as a reminder of the frivolousness of such a concept. They spend their days carrying heavy plastic bags filled with garbage and silence, coldness and noise.
The madmen do not have hearts or waste them, as they are nothing more than black caverns. They are still dreaming of a train that never came and of wives taken away by unknown storms. They have no walking permit and have been mad their entire lives, trapped within a night that has been locked away. They stop traffic with their hands and cross the morning with the aid of a wine bottle. They rest for hours, letting their bones and wings heal. They smoke hundreds of cigarettes in front of the altar of churches.
The song portrays the idea that madness is a form of liberation from what is considered "normal." These "madmen" have no attachments, and although they are not heard, they seem to want for nothing while society is weighed down by its own expectations. They occupy an in-between space where they are unencumbered by the demands of the world. Their madness is simultaneously sad and beautiful.
