Le cygne blanc
Francis Cabrel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Comment?
Un mari qui dérape
Un fils trop tôt parti
Et le cygne s'échappe
Et le cygne vous suit
Un mari qui la frappe
Un fils trop tôt parti
Et le cygne s'échappe
Et le cygne vous suit
Les crédits, la baraque
Tout devient un combat
La boussole se détraque
Et voilà!

Deux heures par semaine
On vous laisse sortir

Dans la société humaine
Où on ne sait plus se tenir

Overall Meaning

In Francis Cabrel's song Le Cygne Blanc, the singer is a woman who walks proudly with a white swan on her arm, claiming it is not a swan from the river but one from a pond. She walks in a way that amuses the passersby, as though she lives to please them under their applause. However, her demeanor changes quickly as she seems to have lost her head, becoming little more than a puppet. She wears some stones around her neck and some white iron trinkets on her ears, and sings for no reason, while the white swan follows her lead. The compass that guides her life is in disarray, and no one knows why it happened, maybe it was her husband who lost control, or her son who suddenly departed, or simply the swan that escaped and started following her. She now lives in a house that she struggles to pay for, and her compass does not work as it should. The chorus talks of being allowed out for two hours a week into humankind's society, where nobody knows how to behave, about how everyone is lost in the life that they created for themselves, talking about a society's challenges and its people's challenges, without offering clear solutions. Cabrel refers to the swan in French folklore representing metamorphosis, one thing transforming into another through a complicated path. The swan is also known to represent beauty and grace, alongside transformation.
