It Bites released three studio albums, The Big Lad in the Windmill (1986), Once Around the World (1988) and Eat Me in St Louis (1989). Their swansong final live album Thank You and Goodnight was released in 1990. It Bites' biggest hit was "Calling All the Heroes" in 1986, which reached #6 in the United Kingdom's Top 40.
Since leaving It Bites, Dunnery has been a solo artist, recording six studio albums: Welcome to the Wild Country (1991), Fearless (1994), Tall Blonde Helicopter (1995), Let's Go Do What Happens (1998), Man (2001), The Gulley Flats Boys (2005). He has performed regularly in both the U.S. and the UK. His biggest solo hit was "American Life in the Summertime". Live, he often performs stripped down acoustic arrangements and is known for his intimate audience relationship, talking at length between songs about the songs and their often deep personal meaning, as exemplified in his 1995 live album, "One Night in Sauchiehall Street".
Dunnery is also the inventor of the guitar based instrument called the tapboard which used parts of a shower hose and an egg timer.
Francis Dunnery was approached to join Genesis, post-Phil Collins, but refused. He contributed backing vocals to Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe's eponymous album. He rehearsed with The Syn for an abortive tour in 2005.

FADE AWAY
Francis Dunnery Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
She stopped me drinking beer and gave me wine
But I can't hide from what I am just an ordinary man
Trying to make it through the day
As I watch our love so slowly fade away
Like a flower
She said my friends were fools and she won't talk to my brother
But I can see it their eyes, they are frowning as they smile
And I didn't have much to say
I just watch our love so slowly fade away
Like a flower
I watch our love so ever slowly fade
Like the summertime
Like the honesty you promised me would stay
She said I gotta change my ways or she's leaving me tommorrow
I said get out of here, leave me alone
And she came crying to my door
Said she liked me as before
But I had a price to pay
Cos at last our love could finally fade away
Like a flower
The lyrics to Francis Dunnery's "Fade Away" delve into the complexities of a failing romantic relationship. The song depicts the dissolution of a relationship where one partner has become overly critical of the other's appearance, behavior, and social circle. As the relationship deteriorates, the singer feels powerless to stop its decline. The first verse paints a picture of a partner who is overly controlling, criticizing the singer's shoes, clothes, and drinking habits. Despite this criticism, the singer feels unable to change who he is at his core. The second verse focuses on the partner's disdain for the singer's family and friends. Although the partner attempts to enforce their own social circle, the singer feels alienated from those around them. The chorus is where the song finds its title and strongest imagery. The singer likens the love between the couple to a flower, slowly wilting and dying before their very eyes. The final verse depicts a breaking point in the relationship, where the partner issues an ultimatum demanding change from the singer or else they will leave. The singer refuses to change, but the partner ultimately returns, although their love has still faded away.
