It Bites released three studio albums, The Big Lad in the Windmill (1986), Once Around the World (1988) and Eat Me in St Louis (1989). Their swansong final live album Thank You and Goodnight was released in 1990. It Bites' biggest hit was "Calling All the Heroes" in 1986, which reached #6 in the United Kingdom's Top 40.
Since leaving It Bites, Dunnery has been a solo artist, recording six studio albums: Welcome to the Wild Country (1991), Fearless (1994), Tall Blonde Helicopter (1995), Let's Go Do What Happens (1998), Man (2001), The Gulley Flats Boys (2005). He has performed regularly in both the U.S. and the UK. His biggest solo hit was "American Life in the Summertime". Live, he often performs stripped down acoustic arrangements and is known for his intimate audience relationship, talking at length between songs about the songs and their often deep personal meaning, as exemplified in his 1995 live album, "One Night in Sauchiehall Street".
Dunnery is also the inventor of the guitar based instrument called the tapboard which used parts of a shower hose and an egg timer.
Francis Dunnery was approached to join Genesis, post-Phil Collins, but refused. He contributed backing vocals to Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe's eponymous album. He rehearsed with The Syn for an abortive tour in 2005.

Soldier
Francis Dunnery Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Lies a happy ever after
You see it on the people that you greet
If you stop them for a while
Say what am I gonna do
If I'm leaving in a fight with you
And how am I gonna fight
and I need your water by my side
(Chorus)
Soldier, this is your life
And you cant run
And you cant hide
In the town
And out in the pouring rain
With an aching in your side
And my future is down memory lane
Cause the present is much to hard
Soldier, this is your life
(end chorus)
Across the sand dunes
In a room
There are soldiers on the phone
They're calling all the people that they love
Cause they cant wait to come home
Say who are you gonna be
If you're always waiting there for me
And when will I be free
You say you carried my daughter
And I need my daughter next to me
(Chorus)
Soldier, this is your life
And you can't run
And you cant hide
In the town
And out in the pouring rain
With an aching in your side
And my future is down memory lane
Cause the present is much to hard
Soldier, this is your life
(end chorus)
Sail home, get back in my home clothes
Sail home, get back in my home clothes
Sitting round the fire at midnight
Calling all my family on my cell
Sail home, get back in my home clothes
Hearing all the sounds across the world
Sitting in this final hell
Sail home, get back in my home clothes
And I wonder if I'll ever get out of here
Only gods time will tell
Sail home, get back in my home clothes
Say what am I gonna do
Sail home, get back in my home clothes
Say what am I gonna do
Sail home, get back in my home clothes
Say what am I gonna do
Sail home, get back in my home clothes
(repeat)
Soldier, this is your life.
The song "Soldier" by Francis Dunnery is about the experiences of a soldier who is going through a difficult time and needs their loved ones to support them. The lyrics explore themes of loyalty, love, and the struggle of being away from home. The opening lines of the song suggest that in every story, there is always a happy ending. This implies that the singer is searching for a way out of their current situation and looking for a happy resolution. However, the chorus repeats the phrase "Soldier, this is your life," implying that the singer must accept their reality and overcome their struggles.
The lyrics in the verses suggest a conversation between two people, one of whom is likely the singer and the other is someone they love. The singer is struggling with their relationship with this person and the difficulties of being a soldier. They express concern about leaving with a fight and needing the support of the other person to get through it. They also worry about their future and how difficult it will be.
Overall, the lyrics are powerful and emotional, addressing the difficulties of being a soldier and the need for love and support during these challenging times. The chorus of the song is particularly compelling and conveys a message of resilience and strength in the face of adversity.
