He is considered one of the most original personalities in Italian music from the 1970s to now. Battiato's songs are dreamy, controversial collages of images and sensations, very experimental and convoluted, rich of esoteric, philosophical and East Asian religious themes.
His collaborations (from 1994 onward) with the nihilistic-cynical philosopher Manlio Sgalambro have added further depth to his apparently nonsensical lyrics, with references to Emil Cioran, Friedrich Nietzsche and other anarchistic and problematic thinkers.
AURORA
Franco Battiato Lyrics

Ed hai abbeverato le colline assetate
Porta a me le cupe nuvole
Affinché le possa riempire d'acqua
Con le mie lacrime, uh
Borghi verso i quali s'incamminano le disgrazie
Come lupi che s'incamminano nella selva
Ed ho visitato tane di gazzelle
Dietro di te, oh mare
Ho un paradiso da scoprire, uh uh
Dove c'è contentezza e miseria alcuna
Se di giorno penso di conquistare
La sera tu me lo rinneghi
Ho ceduto ai desideri che il mare
Mi ha proibito di incontrare
E farò della mezzaluna un battello
Per abbracciare l'ardere di quel fuoco
E farò della mezzaluna un battello
Per abbracciare l'ardere di quel fuoco
Oh tu, Aurora portami la luce
Tu, Aurora portami la luce
La mente è qualcosa di stupefacente
Un tesoro che soddisfa il desiderio
Uno scrigno di ogni possibile cosa
The lyrics of "Aurora" by Franco Battiato are vivid and poetic, evoking images of natural elements like wind, hills, and clouds, as well as animals such as lions and gazelles. At the core of the song is a desire for a kind of inner peace that seems difficult to attain. The singer is looking for something beyond the mundane, and sees the wind as a messenger that can bring him the kinds of clouds that will allow him to fill them with his own tears. He is also fascinated with the idea of a paradise that lies behind the sea, one in which there is no misery or pain, only happiness. There seems to be a sense of longing and melancholy in these lyrics, a sense that the singer is searching for something that may always be out of reach.
The second half of the song shifts somewhat, as the singer confronts a harsh reality. He realizes that he has given in to desires that have been forbidden to him, perhaps by the very sea he had been dreaming of. Nevertheless, he expresses his determination to find a way to embrace the fire that burns within him, and to navigate his way through life's challenges. The repeated refrain of "Oh tu, Aurora, portami la luce" ("Oh you, Aurora, bring me the light") seems to be a kind of prayer, a plea for guidance in a world that can be dark and confusing.
Overall, "Aurora" is a deeply reflective, contemplative song that touches on themes of beauty, desire, and spiritual longing. The lyrics are rich with metaphor and imagery, making it a challenging but rewarding work to interpret and understand.
