He is considered one of the most original personalities in Italian music from the 1970s to now. Battiato's songs are dreamy, controversial collages of images and sensations, very experimental and convoluted, rich of esoteric, philosophical and East Asian religious themes.
His collaborations (from 1994 onward) with the nihilistic-cynical philosopher Manlio Sgalambro have added further depth to his apparently nonsensical lyrics, with references to Emil Cioran, Friedrich Nietzsche and other anarchistic and problematic thinkers.

In "Povera patria," Franco Battiato expresses his disappointment and anger towards the abuse of power and corruption that have plagued his homeland. He labels those in charge as "infamous" and lacking shame, believing themselves to be powerful enough to do as they please. He points out the uselessness and buffoonery of government officials who have left the country in a state of devastation, with bodies in the street without any remorse. Despite this, Battiato doesn't believe that anything will change, but there is always a glimmer of hope for a better future.
The lyrics talk about the disturbing behavior of "hyenas" at the stadiums and in the media, who treat human beings as animals, sinking in the mud like pigs. This deeply troubles Battiato, who feels ashamed at the reality of his country. He wants the world to return to normalcy, where people can appreciate the beauty of nature and not speak of dictatorship, hoping for a brighter future. However, the tone of the song is grim, and Battiato feels that although the situation may not change, he must continue to hope and pray for a better tomorrow as spring delays its arrival.
