He is considered one of the most original personalities in Italian music from the 1970s to now. Battiato's songs are dreamy, controversial collages of images and sensations, very experimental and convoluted, rich of esoteric, philosophical and East Asian religious themes.
His collaborations (from 1994 onward) with the nihilistic-cynical philosopher Manlio Sgalambro have added further depth to his apparently nonsensical lyrics, with references to Emil Cioran, Friedrich Nietzsche and other anarchistic and problematic thinkers.
Voglio vederti danzare
Franco Battiato Lyrics

E Radio Tirana trasmette
Musiche balcaniche mentre
Danzatori bulgari
A piedi nudi sui bracieri ardenti
Nell'Irlanda del Nord
Nelle balere estive
E suonatori zingari ribelli
Nella Bassa Padana
Nelle balere estive
Coppie di anziani che ballano
Vecchi valzer viennesi
The lyrics of Franco Battiato's song "Voglio vederti danzare" express the desire to see someone dancing in different cultural and ritual contexts. The singer asks to see the person dancing like desert gypsies with candelabra on their heads, or like Balinese people on festive days. He also refers to the Dervishes who spin around their spines, and the Kathakali dancers who perform to the sound of ankle bracelets. All these styles and traditions are melded together through the ecstatic feeling of dance, which brings people together and sets them free in their own movements.
Battiato's song captures the universal energy of dance as a celebration of life and community. The verses talk about Radio Tirana broadcasting Balkan music while Bulgarian barefoot dancers walk on burning coals, and Irish elder couples dance to 7/8 rhythms during summer balls. The lyrics also mention trance-like rhythms that unlock the door to tribal rituals and shamanic realms, where gypsy rebels and musicians reign supreme. Finally, Battiato evokes elderly couples dancing in the villages of the Po Valley to the tunes of old Viennese waltzes, showing that dance is a timeless art that transcends boundaries and cultures.
