Françoise Hardy signed her first contract with the record label Vogue in November 1961. In April 1962, shortly after finishing school, her first record Oh Oh Chéri appeared, written by Johnny Hallyday's writing duo. Her own flip side of the record, "Tous Les Garçons Et Les Filles" became a success, riding the wave of Yé-yé music in France, with two million sales.
Hardy sang in French, English, Italian, Spanish, and German. In 1963 she came fifth for Monaco in the Eurovision Song Contest with "L'amour s'en va". In 1963, she was awarded the Grand Prix Du Disque of the Charles Cros Academy.
In 1981, she married her long-time companion Jacques Dutronc, with whom she had had a son, Thomas Dutronc, in 1973. In 1994, she collaborated with the British pop group Blur for their "La Comedie" version of To The End. In May 2000, she made a comeback with the album Clair Obscur. Her son played guitar and her husband sang the duet "Puisque Vous Partez En Voyage." Iggy Pop and Étienne Daho also took part. Hardy lives near Paris and Dutronc lives in Monticello, Corsica, although they remain a couple.[citation needed]
Frag den Abendwind
Francoise Hardy Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Wo das Glück beginnt
Aber frage nicht
Woran es manchmal zerbricht
Frag den Silbermond
Wo die Liebe wohnt
Doch wann sie zerbricht
Das frage nicht
Märchen sind so wunderschön
Weil die Kinder sie versteh'n
Und der Prinz am Ende doch
Den bösen Drachen stets besiegt
Wer den Regenbogen fand
Der am hohen Himmel stand
Der allein weiß wo der schönste
Schatz der Welt begraben liegt
Frag den Abendwind
Wo das Glück beginnt
Aber frage nicht
Woran es manchmal zerbricht
Frag den Silbermond
Wo die Liebe wohnt
Doch wann sie zerbricht
Das frage nicht
Immer bricht der Sommerwind
Blüten wie ein kleines Kind
Das mit seinem schönsten Spielzeug
Nichts mehr anzufangen weiß
Alle Straßen sind so grau
Doch die Welt dreht sich im Kreis
Immer werden Sterne blind
Wenn neu ein junger Tag beginnt
Frag den Abendwind
Wo das Glück beginnt
Aber frage nicht
Woran es manchmal zerbricht
Frag den Silbermond
Wo die Liebe wohnt
Doch wann sie zerbricht
Das frage nicht
The song "Frag den Abendwind" by Françoise Hardy describes the search for happiness and love, but also acknowledges that sometimes they can be elusive and difficult to hold onto. The lyrics suggest that it is better to focus on the beauty and magic of these things rather than dwell on their inevitable end. The evening wind and the silver moon are personified as sources of wisdom and guidance, but also as symbols of the fleeting nature of happiness and love.
The song also references fairy tales and the idea that they are so beloved because they resonate with children's experiences and hopes for a happy ending. The reference to the prince defeating the dragon is a metaphor for the triumph of love over adversity. The line about the rainbow and the buried treasure suggests that true happiness and love are rare and valuable, and that it takes a special kind of person to find and appreciate them.
Overall, the song is both hopeful and bittersweet, acknowledging the impermanence of happiness and love while celebrating their power to inspire and transform us.
