Le Danger
Francoise Hardy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Pouvoir redessiner
Les lignes de ta main
Conjurer le malheur
Être assez forte pour deux
Mais je retiens mes larmes, mes rêves
Mes cris...

Et je voudrais te dire
Ça ira mieux demain
T'arracher un sourire
Mais tu n'entends plus rien
C'est peut-être la peur
Qui rend aveugle et sourd
Qui étrangle l'amour

En étouffe pour toujours
Les cris...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Françoise Hardy's song Le Danger speak of someone who believed they were safe from danger, having closed the door, tidied up, erased any flaws or errors and concealed the wounds of their life. They recited their lesson and followed instructions without question, never noticing the danger that was approaching. And when it arrived, they were left with nothing and in need of completely changing their life, revising their past, shaking things up with friends, reconsidering desires and senses. The singer suggests that they want to help by bringing the things that make people feel good, redrawing the lines of their hand, warding off misfortune and being strong enough for both of them, but they're holding back tears, dreams and cries.

The first two paragraphs describe the misguided sense of safety that the subject felt, having done everything to make life in order and right. But the danger that inevitably lurks around the corner came and they were unprepared. In the last paragraph, the singer sympathetically speaks of wanting to help ease the pain and bring joy, but ultimately the person is too blinded by fear to see or hear anything good. The song speaks to the universal human experience of hiding vulnerabilities and believing ourselves to be safe, but ultimately facing unexpected difficulties that force us to reassess and rebuild our lives.
